INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's tennis team opened the season by splitting a pair of indoor matches on Saturday (Jan. 16), falling at Purdue before returning home to defeat Chicago State. The Boilermakers coasted to a 7-0 win over the Jaguars before IUPUI headed south to West Indy Racquet Club to pick off CSU, 5-2.
At Purdue (1-0), the Boilers made quick work of the Jaguars, winning in straight sets in five of six singles matches. Only senior
Louis Sacks split sets, before falling to Renan Hanayama 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 6. Sophomore
Bradley Luetschwager lost a first set tiebreaker 7-4 and then lost his match at No. 5 to Lucas Dages 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
In doubles play, Purdue swept the top two spots, although
Patrick McAuley and
Matt Moe fared well at No. 3.
Hours later, IUPUI (1-1) got back to .500 with a hard fought win over Chicago State. The Cougars, playing with just five players, yielded the doubles point after Luetschwager and
Kyle Whittaker won at No. 1, 6-2, giving the Jags a 2-0 lead in the match.
Sophomore
David Beasley made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 and
Akshay Verma sealed the win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4. With the outcome already in hand, sophomore
Jac Newis took care of his match at No. 1 with a 7-5, 4-6, (10-6) victory. Luetschwager and Sacks fell at Nos. 4 and 5 respectively, giving the Cougars their two points.
IUPUI will be back in action next weekend, playing three matches in Milwaukee. The Jaguars will face Green Bay on Thursday before then playing Cardinal Stritch and Marquette on Friday.
