IUPUI (11-5, 2-1) vs. Omaha (9-7, 2-2)
The Jungle – Indianapolis, Ind.
Wednesday (Jan. 13), 7:00 p.m. ET
Live StatsVideoINDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI women's basketball team returns to The Jungle this week for a Wednesday (Jan. 13) Summit League showdown with the Omaha Mavericks at 7 p.m. The Jags have played Omaha six times since the Mavs joined the Summit League in 2012. IUPUI has won five of those six contests.
The Jags have won three of their last four games with the only loss coming last week to Oral Roberts in a night where IUPUI shooters struggled. Excluding the loss, the post-holiday Jags have looked impressive with three wins highlighted by solid defense and timely shooting.
Most recently, the Jags devastated Western Illinois with three-point shooting in Macomb, Ill. IUPUI went 8-for-12 from beyond the arc (66.7 percent) in the Jags' best 3-point performance in over a year. The last time IUPUI shot above 60 percent from deep was a 6-for-10 outing against Belmont in December of last season.
While freshman
Sydney Hall poured in three trifectas–junior
Kelsi Byrd and sophomore
Jenna Gunn added one apiece–it was sophomore
Danielle Lawrence who stole the show by starting the game 3-for-3 from distance and 4-for-4 from the floor. Lawrence ended with a game-high 18 points to notch her fifth double-digit scoring night in the last six games. Lawrence took home Summit League Player of the Week honors on Monday (Jan. 11) for her performance.
The Jags look ahead to an Omaha squad that is undoubtedly led by junior forward Mikaela Shaw. Shaw leads the Mavs in points (19.0), rebounds (7.9) and assists (3.1).
A win for IUPUI would widen the gap between the Jags and the four other two-win teams in the Summit League (including Omaha). IUPUI is currently in a tie for third in conference.
The Jags have been impressive with their sharpshooting through 16 games as they rank 40th in the NCAA in field goal percentage (44.3 percent). The Jags also own the best scoring defense among Summit League teams thus far. IUPUI is averaging just 57.9 points per game to opponents. The Jags are 25th in all of NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense holding teams to an average of just 25.9 percent from three-point range.
Wednesday's game will take place at 7 p.m. inside The Jungle on the campus of IUPUI. It will be the first of two home games this week as IUPUI hosts North Dakota State on Saturday at 7 p.m. as well. Scott Agness will have the call on IUPUIjags.com just prior to tip. Admission is free for students.
