Photo GalleryINDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's track team had some strong showings despite cold and rainy conditions at Saturday's Stan Lyons Invitational at the Butler Outdoor Track. The meet was essentially a dual meet between the Jaguars and host Butler with a few unattached entries sprinkled in throughout.
Head Coach
Chuck Koeppen's team entered runners in just two events on Saturday, piling up points in the 1,500 and 5,000m races. Senior
Nathan Westfall was the Jaguars' top finisher in the 1,500 while
Dakota Dubbs led the way in the 5K.
"Dubbs and Westfall both did a nice job today," Koeppen said. "It certainly wasn't great conditions out here with it being rainy and windy, and it's a pretty lowkey meet, but those guys stepped up and ran well. I'm proud of those guys and continue to enjoy watching them get better."
Westfall did damage from the slower of the two heats, winning the race in a time of 3:59.17. Westfall took the lead with just more than 400m to go and stretched the lead out with 200 left before withstanding a final kick from Butler freshman Harry Winter. Junior
Miguel Lozano finished fourth at 4:04.62 and
Mitch Hubner, who led much of the early portion of the race, was fifth at 4:06.61. Freshman
Jeremy Breedlove was the only IUPUI runner in the fast heat as he finished in a time of 4:07.88.
In the 5K, fans were treated to a spectacular dual between Dubbs and former Jaguar Jake Baranowski, who was representing the Indiana University Run Club. The lead traded sides multiple times before Baranowski went back to the front with more than 400 meters remaining. He stretched out his lead over Dubbs and
Tom Ohlman before Dubbs tried to make a move on the race's final turn. However, Dubbs was unable to make a pass on the final straight, finishing at 14:35.98, just more than a second behind Baranowski. Ohlman was third at 14:44.38 and
Joey Zielinski led the seven other IUPUI entries at 15:20.52.
IUPUI will have one final conference tune-up next weekend when the Jaguars participate in the Pacesetter Quadrangular on May 2 in Terre Haute.
