Lauren Mains during Sunday's practice round, the IUPUI women's golf team got off to a sluggish start and never truly rebounded on Monday (Mar. 9) on day one of the Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach Golf Course. The Jaguars turned in a first round 342 and sit a distant seventh among the 10-team standings. Host Butler leads the field at 26-over 314 and Cleveland State is second at 324.Â
IUPUI trails in-state rival Valparaiso by three strokes and has an 11-shot advantage on Central Michigan heading into Tuesday's final round.Â
Senior
Kelli Witt led the Jaguars with an opening round, 9-over 81 and sit just outside the top-10, tied for 11th overall. Behind her, sophomore
Erin Ingram is tied for 20th after shooting 86 on Monday and the team's scoring leader,
Aneta Abrahamova, is tied for 26th at 87.
Fellow freshman
Nicole Toledano is 30th after shooting 88 on Monday. Mains, expected to play her first tournament of the spring, suffered a finger injury during Sunday's practice round, leaving the Jaguars without a fifth player. Head Coach
John Andrews explored the possibility of sending a substitute to Florida following the practice round, but ultimately chose against it.
This year's Benbow Invite will conclude with Tuesday's final round at Jacksonville Beach.
