Photo GalleryAVON, Ind. - The IUPUI women's golf team notched a final round 310 on Tuesday (Mar. 24) at the Butler Spring Invitational, finishing a distant second to the host Bulldogs at Prestwick Country Club this week. Butler finished the 36-hole tournament at 615 and the Jaguars were second among the eight-team field at 636 (326-310).
Northern Iowa (638), Cleveland State (648) and Illinois-Chicago (648) rounded out the top five.
"Not having
Kelli Witt probably hurt us but the good news is we won't be without her the rest of the way," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "The girls are definitely playing better. We're much better now than we were and it's starting to show."
Both
Aneta Abrahamova and
Erin Ingram earned top-10 finishes to pace the Jaguars' lineup. Abrahamova shot a final round 8-over 79 to end her tournament at 154 (75-79), tying her for sixth among the 54-player field. Ingram closed at 79 for the second straight day, ending her tournament at 158 (79-79), tied for eighth. Senior
Carolyn Kupchik had the Jaguars' best round of the day, carding a final round 2-over 73 to climb from 40th place to finishing in 17th.
"(Kupchik) played really well today. It might not have been her best score in college, but it was probably her best round of college golf," Andrews said. "It was good to see her finish strong. She got it up-and-down on five of her last six holes and she wouldn't have done that her freshman year. She could always hit it, but the fact she can get up-and-down shows you she's gotten better.
"Aneta didn't play as well today as she did yesterday. Erin Ingram started well, but she's playing a little hurt. Playing 18 on back-to-back days and being in the cold for six-plus hours may have affected her game."
Freshman
Nicole Toledano ended her tournament at 161 (82-79), tied for 13th, and sophomore
MeKenzie Hilsmeyer rounded out the lineup at 175 (92-83).
"Toledano is playing better," Andrews said. "She's getting to where we want her to be."
Freshman
Sara Saetre led IUPUI's individual entries at 162 (80-82) and
Katie Smith closed at 170 (87-83). Sophomore
Lindsey Budnik finished at 173 (91-82),
Karisa Stojkovich shot 177 (89-88) and freshman
Kennedy Nash shot 192 (101-91), including 40 on her final nine holes.
"I thought Budnik played well today and
Katie Smith played well today," Andrews said. "(Stojkovich) probably had her best tournament of her career and Kennedy played much better today. She's a really athletic kid - I think she's going to be okay."
The Jaguars will return to action on April 3-4 when they compete in the EKU Colonel Classic at Arlington Golf Course in Richmond, Ky..
