Jags improve to 2-0 in Summit League play

INDIANAPOLIS – Last Saturday the IUPUI men's tennis team started its Summit League schedule with a 5-2 win over Fort Wayne, and Friday night at the West Indy Racquet Club the Jaguars improved to 2-0 in league play with a 7-0 sweep of Western Illinois.
 
Overall, the Jags are now 6-11 on the season, while the Leathernecks fell to 0-14.
 
The Jags have won three of their last four matches, and during this recent stretch their doubles play has improved and that continued on Friday. IUPUI lost just two games in doubles play as Patrick O'Neill and Alex Toliver won 8-0 at one doubles, and the teams of Akshay Verma and Adam Reinhart and David Beasley and Jose Calero each won by scores of 8-1 to sweep doubles action.
 
In singles play, Jac Newis overcame a first-set loss to pick up a third-set tiebreak victory (6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (5)) in the tightest match of the evening. The Jags dominated the remainder of the matches with Toliver, Reinhart, Verma and Marcus Nalley each posting 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at their respective positions. In the final match, Calero cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
 
The Jags will have a week off before kicking off a busy weekend next Friday at home against UIC at 6:30 p.m. Summit League foe South Dakota State comes to Indianapolis to square off against IUPUI on Saturday, March 28, before the Jaguars head to Northwestern on Sunday, March 29.
