INDIANAPOLIS - Playing at home for the first time since the opening weekend of the season, the IUPUI men's tennis team took the doubles point in both matches leading them to a pair of 5-2 wins over both SIU-Edwardsville and Saint Louis Friday at the West Indy Racquet Club and Carmel Racquet Club.
The wins improved the Jaguars to 3-7 on the season.
Strong doubles play quickly got the momentum on IUPUI's side in the opener against the Cougars and that carried over into singles play.
Patrick O'Neill and
Alex Toliver teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles, before
Adam Reinhart and
Thomas Gans closed the deal at the No. 2 spot to get the Jags the early 1-0 cushion.
From there,
David Beasley cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 singles spot and Reinhart then followed with a straight-sets win at the No. 3 position to put the Jaguars a point away from victory.
SIUE got on the board winning at the No. 5 spot, but with three matches in the third set, Toliver emerged at the No. 2 spot with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win to secure the victory. Just for good measure,
Jac Newis claimed the win in the No. 1 position, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to finish off the 5-2 victory.
Similar to their earlier match, the Jaguars climbed out to the early lead against Saint Louis winning both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches to seize the 1-0 lead.
In singles play, five of the six matches were decided in straight sets and the Jaguars came out on top in four matches. Toliver, Reinhart, Beasley and Jose Calero were all victorious in their matches to finish off the 5-2 win, and the wins gave Reinhart and Toliver a perfect 2-0 day in both singles and doubles.
IUPUI returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 6, when it hosts Xavier at the West Indy Racquet Club.
