INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's tennis team got a first-hand look at one of the nation's elite teams on Saturday night (Feb. 14) inside the West Indy Racquet Club, ultimately falling to No. 60 Michigan State, 6-1. MSU improved to 5-3 on the spring season while IUPUI slid to 3-9 overall and 2-4 at home. 

The visiting Spartans, playing for the second time on Saturday, flexed their muscles in doubles, winning decisively at Nos. 1 and 3 to take the match's first point. Brett Forman and Gijs Linders dominated Alex Toliver and Patrick O'Neill at the top spot and Jasper Koenen and Doug Zade earned the point at the bottom. 

In singles play, Michigan State kept the momentum going, winning the opening set in five of the six matches. Toliver was IUPUI's lone winner, beating Forman 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 at No. 2 singles. The victory was Toliver's sixth singles win of the season and fourth in duals. 

At No. 3, Adam Reinhart lost a first set tiebreak, which proved costly. His opponent, Mac Roy, carried the momentum to the second set on way to a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory. The loss dropped the DePaul-transfer to 8-5 on the season. 

Freshmen Jac Newis and Thomas Hulme put up solid showings at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively, as Newis fell 6-4, 6-4 to Linders. Hulme was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Zade at the bottom of the lineup. 

IUPUI will not play another dual match until Feb. 28 when the Jaguars play another national power, Louisville, inside Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Jaguars will also play Green Bay that same day in Louisville. Next weekend, the Jaguars will host their annual Alumni Match on Feb. 21 at 1:00 p.m. inside West Indy Racquet Club.
