INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's basketball team plays host to the visiting VCU Rams this Saturday (Nov. 21) in a 7 p.m. contest at The Jungle, the Jags' first home game of the 2015-16 season. The game will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
IUPUI (1-1) looks to build on a 60-55 win Monday (Nov. 16) at Marquette. IUPUI trailed 13-1 to open the contest but battled back to a 30-27 halftime deficit before taking control in the second half, beating a Big East team for the first time in the program's history.
The Jags' senior leader
Akilah Sims was sidelined with foul trouble and was held scoreless following her season-opening 22 point performance against Eastern Illinois. Despite Sims' absence on the court against Marquette, three Jaguars set career-highs. Sophomore
Danielle Lawrence contributed a 23-point career-high game. Junior
Mikale Rogers grabbed 14 boards, also a career-high, while junior
Kelsi Byrd recorded a career-high eight rebounds.
VCU (2-0) comes to Indianapolis following two comfortable wins to open their season. The Rams blasted Coppin State 73-42 before cruising by Iona 75-62 on Tuesday (Nov. 17).
An extremely experienced and balanced team, the Rams start five upperclassmen (four juniors, one senior) all averaging double figures through two games. They've pulled down 92 rebounds in two games while seven players are averaging 4.0 rebounds per game or better.
IUPUI has seen big performances from Sims and Lawrence through two games, just on opposite nights. Rogers has been the consistent Jaguar to contribute two quality performances, notching 19 points and seven rebounds, then nine points and 14 rebounds.
Head Coach
Austin Parkinson hopes his stars can put it all together Saturday (Nov. 21). Rogers and Lawrence are both shooting at a 58.8 percent clip while the Jags are shooting 35.8 percent as a team.
Saturday's game is set for 7 p.m. ET in The Jungle on the campus of IUPUI. It's also Beats Dance Night at The Jungle. IUPUI students will have the chance to take the court for a dance contest and an opportunity to win a pair of Beats by Dre headphones. Tickets will be available at The Jungle an hour prior to tipoff.
