BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second straight week, sophomore Joey Zielinski chipped away at his own school record in the mile, this time setting a new standard at the IU Relays inside Gladstein Fieldhouse on Friday night (Jan. 30). The reigning Summit League Athlete of the Week turned in a time of 4:14.95, lowering his own school record by almost two seconds.

Dakota Dubbs also enjoyed a personal best effort in the mile on Friday, turning a time of 4:19.67 to trim two seconds off his personal best. Zielinski won his heat by nearly two seconds ahead of Illinois' David Schmieg. Elite miler Sam Penzenstadler of Loyola won the event with a time of 4:02.18.

"Joey belonged in the faster heat and he showed that by running the 4:14 very easily," Assistant Coach Evan Fruits said.

In the 3,000m race, junior Miguel Lozano placed fourth overall, spinning a personal best time of 8:28.39. In doing so, he shaved four seconds off his previous best and missed the school record by seven seconds. Behind him, freshman Isaiah White turned in a time of 9:04.29, despite having battled sickness all week.

"Miguel looked good. He had to make too many moves during the race that he paid for a little at the end," Fruits said. "Still, to get a PR is really good for having been sick last week.

"Isaiah has really only had one workout in the past two weeks due to illness."

Zack Smith, running unattached, won the race in a time of 8:24.94.

IUPUI runners will be back in action on day two of the IU Relays on Saturday (Jan. 31) as running events will begin at 10:50 a.m..
