VALPARAISO, Ind. – The seven-match, season-opening road trip for the IUPUI volleyball team continues on Wednesday, Sept. 3, when the Jags travel north to Valparaiso, Ind., to square off against the Valparaiso Crusaders.

The match is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET, and live stats and free live streaming of the match can be accessed through IUPUIJags.com.

IUPUI heads to Valparaiso on the heels of a 1-2 start to the 2014 campaign against some tough competition. The Jaguars opened the year with an impressive three-set win over Toledo before falling in three sets to No. 9 BYU and a much-improved West Virginia squad.

Kaitlyn Hickey led the team in kills for the weekend with 3.33 kps, while Logan Walling was the team's most efficient attacker hitting at a .308 clip. Kelly Wachtel ranked second on the team in both categories – 2.89 kps and .270 – and was named to the Blue and Gold Player's Challenge All-Tournament Team.

Collectively, the Jags were strong defensively at the net in the opening weekend outblocking their opponents, but head coach Steve Payne knows his team must improve its serving if it's going to get back on track this week.

"We had way too many serving errors last weekend and we only had one ace. That's definitely something we have been working on these past few days," Payne said. "Last year, we had more aces than errors for the season and that was one of our strengths. We just need to get back to being a little more aggressive behind the service line and that will lead to some positive results."

Valparaiso posted a 2-1 record in its season-opening tournament notching wins over Wofford and North Carolina Central. The Crusaders were most impressive behind the service line throughout the first three matches serving up 26 aces.

Offensively, Emily Campbell led the charge for Valpo last weekend averaging 3.67 kps and she was one of four players to average over 2.0 kps.

"Valparaiso is a very good team that does a great job of mixing up what they're doing," Payne said. "It's always a tough match playing them in their gym so we need to correct our mistakes from last weekend if we're going to come home with a win."

Wednesday's match will be the 35th meeting all time between the in-state rivals with Valparaiso holding a 21-13 edge. The Jags are 2-12 when playing in Valparaiso, with their last road win occurring on Nov. 7, 2003.
