ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's golf team will play an elite course and against an elite field as the Jaguars participate in the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, hosted by Indiana this weekend. The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Saturday (Sept. 20), followed by a final round on Sunday (Sept. 21).
Wolf Run, ranked among the nation's best modern golf courses, will play at par-71, 7,155 yards this weekend. The 15-team field includes Akron, Ball State, Chattanooga, Eastern Michigan, Florida, Houston, Illinois, Kentucky, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Penn State, South Alabama and William & Mary, along with nine individuals, totaling 84 golfers total. Illinois comes in ranked No. 7 nationally according to Golfstat and Houston is ranked No. 9. Nearly half of the 15-team field is ranked among the nation's top 100.
"We obviously know Wolf Run fairly well from practicing there and playing there pretty often," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "Santi (Ruiz) obviously knows it very well, having shot 65 there last season. I think more than anything, we want to play some consistent golf and see where that puts us. The course is going to be good and there are a lot of good teams there and that's okay by us. We're got five very capable guys playing this weekend."
Junior
Rylan Porter is coming off a 54-hole, 4-under 206 at the Doc Gimmler, firing three consecutive rounds under par at that event. Porter leads The Summit and is tied for 14th nationally in scoring average in the season's early going, checking in at 68.7 after one tournament. Three other Jaguars are among the league's top 10 in stroke average as
Santiago Ruiz is fourth at 71.6 and both
Jose Pablo Segurola and
Derek Rohlfing are tied for eighth at 72.6.
All four will be in the Jaguars' lineup this week, along with junior
Austin Winings. Winings enters play with a 74.0 scoring average in two tournaments.
IUPUI finished 10th of 14 teams at this tournament last season with Segurola leading the way at 10-over 223 (76-77-70). Ruiz highlighted the Jaguars' efforts with a final round 65, putting him at 14-over 227. Winings shot 238 (82-77-79) and Rohlfing carded 249 (83-83-83) at Wolf Run last year.
No live scoring will be available, but full results and photos will be posted on IUPUIJags.com afterwards.
