Live AudioGREEN BAY, Wisc. - The IUPUI women's soccer team will hit the road to face a pair of Horizon League foes to start the 2014 season, squaring off with Green Bay on Friday (Aug. 22) before playing at Valparaiso on Sunday (Aug. 24). Friday's match is slated for 5:00 p.m. Eastern while Sunday's kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
IUPUI, coming off a 5-9-5 campaign, played both Green Bay and Valpo to ties at Carroll Stadium last season. Similarly, the Jaguars played Ball State to a 1-1 draw in its lone exhibition this season. Sophomore
Alyssa Fox, a Summit League All-Newcomer pick last season, scored the Jaguars' lone goal off an assist from junior forward
Kalli Shepler-Tucker. Sophomore
Nicole Kulovitz and freshman
Catherine Schmidt split time in goal against the Cardinals.Â
Reigning team Offensive MVP
Tori Minnich scored her first career goal in the 1-1 draw with Green Bay last season, thanks to assists from Shepler-Tucker and
Catherine Raster. Departed goalieÂ
Giselle Guzman made seven stops in 110 minutes of work in that contest. Against Valpo, Guzman and Kulovitz teamed for one of the team's three shutouts last season, combining to make four saves. Shepler-Tucker led the IUPUI attack with five shot attempts, putting three on target.Â
The Jaguars are looking to open a season with a win for the first time since 2006 when they kicked off the year with a 2-0 victory over Murray State.Â
Green Bay went 4-8-5 last season and 1-5-1 in Horizon League play. The Phoenix posted a 1.05 goals against average as a team, but scored just 12 times in 17 games in 2013. Senior Hannah Kernen scored a team-high three goals for UWGB a season ago. Friday's game is just the second-ever meeting between the two schools with the lone other meeting being last year's tie.Â
Valpo was 8-7-3 last year and 2-3-2 in the Horizon League. Departed goalie Kristen Manski had a 0.79 GAA and 82 saves in 18 starts last season while Jenny Fassbinder keys the returning Crusaders, having scored three goals last season. IUPUI is just 3-10-3 all-time against VU and has not beaten the Crusaders since 2004. IUPUI is 2-6 all-time on the road against Valpo, including having lost their past four trips to its former conference foe.Â
