INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In their weekend off from conference play, the Jaguars (4-16, 1-1) came away with a split against Chicago State (4-19) and Northwestern (15-9). Following an early afternoon 6-1 win over the Cougars, the Jaguars drove north to Evanston where they fell to another feline foe, the Wildcats, 5-0.
IUPUI's win over Chicago State was their first win in three weeks and saw five of six singles players come out on top.
Thomas Gans was the only one on the losing end, although his match played to a third-set super tiebreak. The 10-6 tiebreak loss dropped Gans's record to 4-2 in tiebreaks this year.
Akshay Verma won his No. 5 singles match in straight sets, but required a tiebreak in the first. The win was his sixth in singles and improved his tiebreak record to 3-1.
Gans and
Jacob Bradley won their eighth doubles match of the year at No. 2 doubles improving their record to 8-5. Although they fell 8-4 in their later match against Northwestern, it was against the 30th-ranked team in the country and at No. 1 doubles, preserving their record at No. 2.
After their strong showing against Chicago State, the Jaguars took on one of the nation's best in 37th-ranked Northwestern. Following Northwestern's 8-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, they immediately moved on to singles where the Wildcats plowed through a few straight-setters to clinch the match. Up 5-0 with wins at the bottom four singles spots, No. 1 and 2 singles were called.
Jason Jaruvang had the daunting task of facing the 113th-ranked player in the country, Sam Shropshire. There was some hope coming into the match after Jaruvang took down IU's top player and the then 60th-ranked player in the country Sam Monette on March 14. The result wasn't the same though and while it won't go down as a win or a loss, Jaruvang trailed 6-1, 5-3 before it was called.
This weekend's split continued the recent trend of alternating wins and losses and puts the Jaguars at 4-16 overall. They'll resume conference play this Thursday (Apr. 10) in Omaha against the Mavericks before travelling to Denver for a pair of matches against the Pioneers and South Dakota State Jackrabbits over the weekend.
