JAGS OPEN SUMMIT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT AGAINST WESTERN ILLINOIS

IUPUI won their previous matchup with Western Illinois 6-0 on March 15

4/24/2014 1:00:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – With the regular season all wrapped up, the Jaguars are headed to Denver for the Summit League Tournament. The men's tennis team finished the season with a 6-19 overall record and 2-3 in conference, earning them the fourth seed in the tournament and a matchup with fifth-seeded Western Illinois.

The Jaguars had no trouble with Western Illinois in their March 15 matchup, defeating the Leathernecks 6-0, and are the favorites to advance to the semifinal. The bad news for the Jaguars is they'll be matched up with first-seed and conference favorites Denver if they do advance.

The Jaguars' 4-3 loss to South Dakota State looms large now; a 4-3 win would have avoided a potential matchup with Denver until the finals.

Fortunately for the Jaguars, they enter the post season with a little bit of momentum after winning their season finale 5-2 over Detroit. Both of IUPUI's top two players, Jason Jaruvang and Alex Toliver won in straight sets against Detroit.

Jaruvang and Toliver have been among IUPUI's most consistent players in singles all season and both will need to have a strong showing in Denver for the Jaguars to make a run. They've made the Summit League finals the last three years and to make it this year they'll need to start with a win against Western Illinois.

Friday's match with Western Illinois will be the first in the tournament this year and will begin at 4 p.m. ET.
