IUPUI SET TO TAKE ON DENVER IN SEMIFINAL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - With their win over North Dakota State in the first round of The Summit League Tournament, the Jaguars moved on to the semifinals where they'll play the sixth-seed Denver Pioneers. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m. ET Monday (March 10)

ABOUT DENVER
  • The Pioneers enter The Summit League Tournament Semifinals with an overall record of 8-22 and a 5-9 record in conference.
  • Denver upset third-seeded Fort Wayne in the opening round of the conference tournament. After falling behind 47-39 midway through the second half, the Pioneers fought back for the 79-73 win.
  • Denver has averaged 76.5 points per game this season and has three players scoring in double-figures led by Kailey Edwards at 12.7 ppg.
  • Paige Bradley and Theresa Wirth are the two other double-figure scorers at 12.4 and 10.7 ppg respectively.
  • Denver is statistically the best passing team remaining in the tournament. They averaged 15 assists per game in conference play.
 
THE SERIES WITH THE PIONEERS
  • IUPUI owns a 3-1 series lead over Denver including a season sweep this year. The Jaguars defeated the Pioneers 82-66 at home on January 18 68-55 in Denver on February 13.
  • Denver joined The Summit League this year and will play IUPUI in The Summit League Tournament for the first time in the semifinals.
 
LAST TIME OUT…
  • The Jaguars defeated the North Dakota State Bison 72-64 in the opening round of the Summit League Tournament.
  • With the win, IUPUI advanced to the Summit League Tournament semi-finals for the third consecutive season and pushed their record win total to 22 games this season.
  • DeAirra Goss led all scorers with 25 points including 11 of 13 shooting from the line.
  • Nevena Markovic posted her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Dee-Dee Bellamy also scored 11 points and Shanika Maddox added 10 points and six rebounds.
  • IUPUI bucked their recent trend of slow starts, jumping out to a 17-7 lead in the first seven minutes.
  • NDSU's Marena Whittle hit a 3-pointer for the Bison to cut the lead to seven points but the Jaguars answered with eight straight points at the basket and take a 25-10 lead.
  • After two quick buckets from the Bison, the Jags went rack back into the paint for seven straight points and extending the lead to 32-14. Sims made two layups and converted an and-one attempt during the stretch.
  • The Jaguars lead reached 19 in the half and they carried a 44-26 advantage going into the break.
  • IUPUI outscored NDSU 28-8 in the paint in the first half and shot 54 percent compared to 39 percent for the Bison.
  • It looked like the game would get away from the Bison when the Jaguars opened up the second half with a Markovic jumper for a 20-point lead, but IUPUI wouldn't score again for over seven minutes.
  • NDSU would cut the lead to just eight points during the stretch.
  • Bellamy answered for the Jaguars with a layup and-one to get back up eleven points with 11:57 to go in the game.
  • An 11-5 run by the Bison cut it to 54-49 with 9:03 left.
  • The game remained between five and 10 points the rest of the way as neither team was able to string together man baskets.
  • After a Goss layup with 1:56 left put the Jaguars up 66-59, NDSU fouled the rest of the way.
  • IUPUI knocked down six of its final eight free throws to seal the game.
  • IUPUI shot just one for 12 from behind the arc, but took 16 more free throw attempts and made 11 more than the Bison.
  • IUPUI also outscored the Bison 44-24 in the paint and 22-13 off turnovers.
SUMMIT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
  • For the second straight season, IUPUI enters the Summit League Tournament as the No. 2 seed.
  • IUPUI has now reached The Summit League Semifinals each of the last three seasons, although they failed to reach the finals the last two years.
  • IUPUI is 9-13 all-time in the Summit League Tournament, including a 3-2 record under Austin Parkinson.
  • The Jaguars have advanced to The Summit League Championship Game once since joining the conference during the 1998-99 campaign, which occurred back during the 2006-07 season.
 
AGAINST THE PIONEERS
  • This season, the Jaguars are 2-0 against the Pioneers winning 82-66 in Indianapolis on January 18 and 68-55 in Denver on February 13.
  • Two players, DeAirra Goss and Akilah Sims, averaged double-figure scoring against Denver this season. Goss averaged 16 ppg and Sims averaged 11 in their two games this season.
  • IUPUI shot 46.5 percent (53-114) in two games this year against Denver, compared to just 38.9 percent (37-95) for Denver.
  • IUPUI outscored the Pioneers by a combined 68-36 in the paint and grabbed 25 offensive boards compared to 18 for Denver in their two games.
  • The Jaguars have also done a much better job taking care of the ball against Denver this year, turning the ball over only 20 times compared to 34 times for Denver.
