FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IUPUI (3-15, 1-1) and IPFW (12-5, 3-0) came into Saturday's match undefeated in conference, but IPFW capitalized on its early lead and dealt IUPUI its first Summit League loss 6-1. After quickly claiming the doubles point, the Mastodons took three straight singles matches to clinch four points and the victory.
Alex Toliver and Patrick O'Neill struggled to keep up with IPFW's No. 1 doubles pair of Daniel Kang and Andres Cobos. Kang and Cobos hit 19 winners, just one fewer than total points won by Toliver and O'Neill. The biggest difference though was Kang and Cobos's 100 percent conversion rate on break points. They won all four while Toliver and Jaruvang went zero for two. The Jags held on Toliver's serve in the seventh game, but it was too late. IPFW finished off the match 8-1.
No. 3 doubles didn't do much better.
Jason Jaruvang and
Manuel Laboy were able to hold serve a few times, but couldn't get any momentum and lost 8-4.
As usual,
Jacob Bradley and
Thomas Gans were playing well at No. 2 doubles, but it didn't do any good this time. The pair was on serve at six-all before the match was called and the doubles point clinched for the 'Dons.
In singles, Jaruvang headed the Jaguars' lineup and Kang the Dons' lineup at No. 1. The first set began with neither player able to get much traction on the other's serve. Both players held serve four straight times without any break opportunities. While Jaruvang didn't have much trouble holding serve, Kang absolutely breezed through his. While he served just 69 percent on the first serve compared to 85 percent for Jaruvang, Kang hit three aces and won over 90 percent of his first serve points in the first set. On cruise-control during his serve, Kang was just waiting for Jaruvang to slip up. Tied four-all, he did and Kang capitalized. Kang won his first break-point opportunity and held serve at love to take the set 6-4. Jaruvang was solid in the set, hitting just six unforced errors to Kang's 13, but Kang overpowered Jaruvang with 20 winners.
Jaruvang found some success in the second set at the net, where he won seven of 12 points and baited Kang into a lob error. He nearly doubled his winners and even managed to break Kang's monster serve, but it wasn't enough. Kang broke Jaruvang's serve three times and won the second set 6-3.
Jaruvang served well all match, hitting nearly 80 percent of his first serves in, but Kang's power game was too much. He hit 32 winners, more than doubling Jaruvang, and forced another dozen errors.
After Jaruvang's 6-4, 6-3 loss, the Jaguars were down 2-0. Bradley and Verma quickly followed suit, winning just five and four games respectively in their matches, giving IPFW four points and the win.
Gans was the bright spot for the Jaguars, claiming his win at No. 4 singles in straight sets. It was his eighth singles win, tying him with Toliver for the team lead.
No. 2 and 6 singles were the last two matches to finish and both went to third sets. Since the match hadn't been clinched prior to the start of the third set in Laboy's match, he played a full third set. After dropping the first 6-1, he took the second set by a break and opened the third with another break. The comeback seemed to take its toll though. Laboy hit three of his 12 unforced errors during his serve in the second game of the set. His opponent broke back and won four straight games. Laboy held serve once more, but dropped the last two games, the set and the match.
Toliver played a super tiebreak in place of the third set, but couldn't get anything going. His opponent, Andres Cobos opened with a service winner and immediately broke Toliver's serve. Toliver held his ground through the changeover and got to within 3-4 after a wide serve and cross-court combination, but would win only one more point in the tiebreak. With the 10-4 tiebreak loss, his record dropped to 4-4 in tiebreaks this season. A win in the match would have given Toliver a team-leading nine wins on the season and improved his singles record to .500, but instead he fell 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (4) and dropped to 8-10.
With the loss, the Jaguars fall to 3-15 on the season and 1-1 in conference while IPFW remained perfect in conference at 3-0. IUPUI will travel to Chicago next Sunday (Apr. 6) for a pair of non-conference matches before taking on Omaha in their next conference match on April 10.
