VERMILLION, S.D. –
Dee-Dee Bellamy scored a team-high 11 points, but a late second-half surge from South Dakota gave the Coyotes a 74-56 win over the IUPUI women's basketball team Saturday at the Dakota Dome.
The loss snapped IUPUI's nine-game winning streak and dropped the Jags to 19-7 overall and 9-2 in The Summit League, while USD improved to 14-11 and 5-5 in league play. The win was South Dakota's fifth in its last six games.
"If you are going to beat a good team on the road, you can't turn the ball over and you can't give up 18 offensive rebounds and expect to win," head coach
Austin Parkinson said. "You have to credit them for the way they played, but we had a ton of mental errors from an experienced basketball team that you don't expect this late in the season."
IUPUI's leading scorer
DeAirra Goss, who had scored at least 20 points in three straight games, had one of those days when a majority of her shots just would not fall as she finished with just nine points on 3-of-16 shooting and eventually fouled out in just 23 minutes of action. Collectively, the Jags hit just 35.2 percent of its shots, but the difference came at the free throw line where USD made 25 of its 28 attempts compared to IUPUI hitting just 16 of its 28 tries.
"You're going to have nights like that when the ball won't go in, but you can't let your offensive game take you away from your defensive mentality," Parkinson said. "Going forward, we have to find a way to have our better players eliminate the silly fouls in order to keep them on the floor."
To start, IUPUI got several good looks in the paint in the first few minutes, but it could not get the ball to go through the hoop. Even though the Jaguars didn't have any points to show for its solid offensive execution, a free throw from
Akilah Sims, an elbow jumper from Bellamy and two triples from
Nicole Rogers allowed the Jaguars to take a 9-2 lead by the first media timeout.
The lead grew to eight points following an old-fashioned, three-point play from
Mikale Rogers, but an 8-0 USD run brought the Coyotes back within two with 11:48 to play in the first half.
The IUPUI lead stretched back to six, but South Dakota fought back again and picked up seven points from Polly Harrington during a 10-0 run to take a 22-18 lead with less than eight minutes to go.
After the USD lead reached five, the Jags picked up four points from
Shanika Maddox and two from Mikale Rogers to place them back in front, 26-25, but the Coyotes managed to open their biggest lead of the half, 33-27, following two Nicole Seekamp free throws with five seconds to play. Bellamy quickly raced down the floor and got a running lay-up to go just before the horn sounded trimming the Jags deficit to 33-29 entering the break.
The halftime deficit marked IUPUI's first since trailing at South Dakota State on Jan. 9, and it entered halftime trailing due to just 5-of-11 shooting from the stripe and 11 turnovers.
Out of the half, the Coyotes were able to stretch their lead to 12 points, 47-35, nearly six minutes in, but the Jags made a run of their own to close within four, 50-46, with nine minutes to play.
For a couple minutes, the Jaguars deficit fluctuated between five and nine points, but they could never cut their deficit any further.
Down the stretch, the Coyotes got timely scoring from Raeshel Contreras and Seekamp and they pulled eventually away for the 18-point victory.
The Jags have a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they head to Fort Wayne, Ind., to take on Fort Wayne. Tip is set for 2 p.m. ET.
