ABOUT INDIANA STATE
- The Sycamores are off to an impressive 5-1 start under the direction of first-year head coach Joey Well.
- Indiana State got off to a strong start with wins over Saint Louis and Butler, before dropping its lone game against Stetson.
- Since that loss, ISU has rallied off three straight wins, including a four-point overtime road win at Indiana last Sunday.
- Racheal Mahan is the team's leading scorer and rebounder at 14.3 ppg and 8.2 rpg, and she is shooting 56.3 percent from the floor.
- The Sycamores are shooting 40.5 percent from the floor and 28.2 percent from three, but their defense has been impressive through six games.
- ISU is holding its opponents to 59.3 ppg thanks in part to a defense that is holding opponents to 36.6 percent shooting from the floor and 28.1 percent shooting from three.
- Indiana State also owns a +5.0 edge on the glass, and it is forcing the opposition into 21.5 turnovers per game.
THE SERIES THE SYCAMORES
- Indiana State owns an 8-3 lead in the all-time series between the two schools.
- Despite trailing in the series, IUPUI has won the last two meetings, including a road win at Indiana State last year, 68-64.
- That win in Terre Haute a season ago marked the program's first win in seven tries at the Hulman Center.
- LAST TIME OUT ...
- Mikale Rogers led the way with a season-high 17 points and Kelsi Byrd tied a career-high with 15 points, but a late surge from Montana State propelled the Bobcats to an 80-74 victory Saturday afternoon in the final game for both teams at the Radisson Chatsworth Thanksgiving Tournament.
- Coming off a 10-point loss on Friday (Nov. 28) against Texas Southern in which IUPUI had its worst shooting performance of the season, the Jags shot 50.0 percent from the field, including 47.1 percent from three, but the Bobcats shot 49.2 percent from the floor and outscored the Jaguars bench 48-19 to earn the win.
- Joining Rogers and Byrd in double figures was Shaquira Scott, who added 14 points and four rebounds.
- "Even though we lost, I felt like we took some positive steps going forward," head coach Austin Parkinson said. "We learned a lot about our team on this trip and what it will take to be successful going forward."
- Six points from Scott and four from Rogers in the first five minutes propelled the Jaguars to a 13-4 lead a quarter of the way through the first half.
- As the eight-minute mark neared, Montana State knotted the score at 17-17, before eventually catapulting in front, 31-23, with 3:23 to play.
- The cushion remained at eight with 1:57 to go, but an 8-0 run over the final two minutes highlighted by an old-fashioned three-point play from Scott and a three from Byrd sent IUPUI into the half tied at 35-35.
- The score remained tied four minutes and 30 seconds into the second half, but an 11-4 Jaguars run featuring a pair of three's from Nicole Rogers and a three from Mikale Rogers opened up a 53-46 cushion at the 13:22 mark.
- A Jasmine Hommes free throw with 8:00 to play brought the Bobcats back and evened the score at 59-59, before Montana State took a six-point lead at 73-67 following a Lindsay Stockton triple with 3:02 to play.
- IUPUI closed within three on two occasions, before inching within a basket, 76-74, on a pair of Mikale Rogers free throws with 15 seconds to go.
- The Jags needed to foul and at least one missed free throw on the other end of the floor, but Montana State hit both of its attempts to move its cushion back to four. Looking to cut the deficit to one possession again, a Mikale Rogers shot fell off the rim into the hands of a Bobcats defender. An IUPUI foul ensued and two made free throws from Hannah Caudill with three seconds to go finished off the 80-74 win.
- For her efforts during the weekend, Scott was named to the All-Tournament Team.
THREE TIMES AS NICE
- Coming into the season, Nicole Rogers served as IUPUI's top threat from deep after burying 71 three's as a sophomore.
- However, Rogers was the only Jag to hit more than 20 triples and shoot higher than 35.0 percent from deep.
- Through six games, the three-pointer has been one of the Jags strengths as they are hitting at a collective 38.2-percent clip.
- Kelsi Byrd is the team leader with nine made three's on the year, followed by Nevena Makovic and Nicole Rogers with six triples apiece.
- All three are shooting at least 40.0 percent from behind-the-arc, and the trio went 11-of-23 from three last weekend against Texas Southern and Montana State.
- As a team, the Jaguars have hit at least six three pointers in three straight games, marking the first time since the 2003-04 season that IUPUI has done that.
- That season, the Jags hit at least six triples in four straight games.
BYRD GETS THE NOD
- Kelsi Byrd missed the second game of the season against Eastern Illinois due to illness, but since her return she has been effective in four starts for IUPUI.
- After notching just two double-figure scoring games as a freshman, Byrd has reached double figures in two of the last three games.
- On the season, she is fourth on the team in scoring at 7.4 ppg, while tying for the team lead in assists with 10 and leading the team with nine made three's (1.5 3pt/g).
- Her first double-figure scoring game came on Nov. 25 against SIU-Edwardsville when she scored 11 points thanks in part to three triples, before tying a career high with 15 points against Montana State on Nov. 29.
- Byrd has made multiple three's in each of the Jaguars last three games, and she has recorded an assist in all five games she has played in.
LIKE TO BE LIKE MIKALE
- After failing to score for the first time this season against Texas Southern on Nov. 28, Mikale Rogers bounced back in a big way against Montana State the following day.
- Rogers scored a season-high 17 points against the Bobcats on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. She also hit a three, the first of her career, and went 2-of-2 from the line.
- The Indianapolis-native added three rebounds, one block and one steal in addition to distributing a career-high six assists.
- This season, Rogers is averaging 7.0 ppg and 2.8 rpg.
