LAST TIME OUT ...
- A 13-0 run to close the first half sent Indiana into the half with a double-digit lead and IUPUI couldn't recover as it fell to the Hoosiers, 68-55, Sunday afternoon (Dec. 7) at Assembly Hall.
- Indiana came into the game ranked ninth in the country in scoring averaging just under 90 points per game, but the Jags were able to outrebound IU, 41-30, and kept Indiana to their second-lowest scoring output of the season.
- Kelsi Byrd and Mikale Rogers led the way with 11 points apiece, while Jenna Gunn scored seven points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
- The win upped Indiana's record to 7-1, while IUPUI fell to 2-6.
- Akilah Sims converted an old-fashioned three-point play to get the game started, but a 10-0 Hoosiers run placed them in front three minutes in.
- A three from Byrd and baskets from Gunn and Nevena Markovic knotted the score at 10, but Indiana responded with a quick 5-0 spurt to stay in front.
- Indiana's lead fluctuated between four and seven until a three from Byrd and six straight points from Mikale Rogers put the Jags in front, 26-25, with 5:15 to play.
- Three Hoosiers free throws and a Mikale Rogers free throw made the score 28-27 in Indiana's favor, but the Jags went scoreless the remainder of the half allowing the Hoosiers to go on a 13-0 run the final 4:21 to open a 41-27 lead at the half.
- A minute into the second half, a three from Byrd and a lay-up from Sims brought the Jags within single digits at 41-32, and they remained within 10 following a Martha Burse lay-up with 12:42 to go.
- However, deep three's on back-to-back possessions with the shot clock winding down from Tyra Buss and Larryn Brooks opened a 55-39 Hoosiers lead with 11:45 remaining.
- The Jags continued to play hard, but they could not string together a run to make things interesting.
- Down the stretch, Indiana was able to take time off the clock and convert on some opportunities with the shot clock winding down to keep their lead at a comfortable margin before eventually finishing off the 68-55 victory.
SOPHOMORE SURGE
- As true freshmen, both Kelsi Byrd and Mikale Rogers played in all 33 games but they averaged 14.5 and 12.0 minutes per game, respectively.
- Rogers averaged 6.0 ppg, while Byrd averaged 2.6 ppg.
- However, this season the duo has received more minutes and that has resulted in more scoring production for the Jags.
- In eight games, Byrd ranks fourth on the team in scoring with 7.3 ppg, while Rogers is averaging 7.1 ppg.
- Byrd leads the team in minutes played per game with 25.0, and she is the only player that has a positive assist-to-turnover ration (13:10).
- Both Byrd and Rogers are coming off double-figure scoring games against Indiana as both scored 11 points apiece.
- Over the last three games, Byrd is averaging 9.7 ppg while shooting 50.0 percent from the field (10-of-20), including 53.8 shooting from three (7-of-13).
- During that same stretch, Rogers is averaging 10.7 ppg on 48.0 percent shooting (12-of-25).
OFFENSIVE GLASS
- Coming into the season, one of the strengths for the Jaguars was their frontcourt depth and that has helped them perform well on the glass through the first quarter of the season.
- IUPUI has been outrebounded only once this season (at Michigan State), and collectively is outrebounding its opponents 38.6 to 33.5.
- Part of that is due to its ability to consistently grab offensive rebounds.
- The Jags have grabbed double-digit offensive rebounds in all eight games this season, which includes a season-high 18 offensive rebounds in their last game at Indiana.
- In total, they have secured offensive rebounds on 43.8 percent of their missed shots this season.
- Jenna Gunn is the team leader in offensive rebounds grabbing 21, and she is followed by Shanika Maddox's 17.
- The team's 109 offensive rebounds this season have turned into 120 second-chance points, averaging out to 15.0 points per game.
