INDIANAPOLIS - All 14 players scored, led by
Shawnece Teague's 21 points, leading the IUPUI women's basketball team to a 109-65 exhibition win over Oakland City Monday evening at The Jungle.
Joining Teague in double-figures was
Martha Burse with 15,
Jenna Gunn with 13,
Danielle Lawrence with 12 and
Akilah Sims with 10.
The defensive pressure which IUPUI has become known for under the direction of head coach
Austin Parkinson resulted in 36 turnovers for the Oaks, and on the other end of the floor the Jags did a good job sharing the ball posting 21 assists on 44 made field goals.
Breaking in six new players to the fold, it took the Jaguars some time to get going, but seven points off the bench from Teague in a four-minute span helped IUPUI seize a 23-14 lead at the midway point of the first half.
From that point, a three from the top of the key from
Nicole Rogers and offensive put backs from Sims and
Caitlyn Tolen upped the cushion to 30-14 with just over eight minutes to play.
However, IUPUI foul trouble allowed Oakland City to chip into its deficit from the free throw line helping it close to within nine, 36-27, with 5:40 on the clock. From that point, the Jags closed the half on an 18-5 run to take a 54-32 lead into the break.
Out of halftime, the Jaguars hovered around 30 percent shooting from the floor, but five points from Teague, and a three from Burse upped the advantage back to 23, 82-59, with eight minutes to play.
Down the stretch, the outcome was never in doubt as IUPUI pulled away for the 109-65 win.
Up next for the Jaguars is their season-opener on Friday, Nov. 14, against No. 11/12 Louisville at the newly renovated Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum. The contest against the Cardinals will be the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader, with the men's team taking on Indiana State at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth under the age of 12.
