INDIANAPOLIS - Two of the remaining four unbeaten teams in Summit League play face off this weekend when the IUPUI volleyball team returns home to host South Dakota on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. inside The Jungle.
The Coyotes have sprinted out to a 3-0 start in league action for the second season in a row, and IUPUI started its league schedule with road wins at Omaha and North Dakota State.
"South Dakota is one of the top teams in our league with a very explosive offense," head coach
Steve Payne said. "Kendall Kritenbrink is a great player, but USD has other offensive threats that our defense also needs to watch."
USD ranks in the top three in the conference in kills (2nd, 783), kills per set (3rd, 13.27), hitting percentage (3rd, .215), assists (2nd, 12.53) and aces (2nd, 76). Kritenbrink is the go-to player offensively ranking third in the league in kills with 4.39 kps, including 4.69 kps in her first three league contests. While Kritenbrink puts down a lot of kills, Melissa Firtko has established herself as the most efficient hitter in the league with a .365 hitting percentage. Defensively, Firtko also ranks in the Top 5 in blocking with 1.19 bps.
For the Jags,
Kaitlyn Hickey is coming off an impressive week in which she averaged 5.25 kps leading the Jags to a pair of league wins. That kills per set average is tops in the conference in league-only play. Hickey's play on the offensive end was matched by
Beth Howard on the defensive end which resulted in her earning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time this season. Howard averaged 5.25 dps for the week and amassed a season and conference-high 31 digs in a five-set win over Omaha.
Friday's meeting will be the seventh between the two schools with the Jaguars holding on to a 5-1 lead in the all-time series. The season series was split last season with each team winning on its home floor.
Following Friday's home match, IUPUI will head to Tulsa, Okla. on Sunday, Oct. 5, for its first meeting since 2011 with Oral Roberts. Similar to the Coyotes, the Golden Eagles possess a strong offensive attack led by Laura Milos. Her 4.47 kps ranks second in the conference and she benefits from having the league's top distributor in terms of assists per set in Lucija Bojanjac.
As a team, Oral Roberts leads the league in aces with 86 and again it is Milos leading the way with 22.
ORU leads the all-time series 30-3 over IUPUI, and it has won four straight in the series. The Jags last win in Tulsa came back on Oct. 31, 2009, by a score of 3-1.
