INDIANAPOLIS - Coming off their third consecutive Summit League Tournament appearance last Spring, the Jaguars had a solid start to the fall season against a competitive field at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette. The Jags posted a combined 11-12 record and both Rudolph Frazier and Akshay Verma advanced to the consoloation finals in their flights.

Sophomore Jason Jaruvang came in to the meet as IUPUI's top singles player after finishing his rookie season with a school-record 28 wins and two tournament titles during the ITA Summer Circuit this past summer. Jaruvang played in Flight A and took one-set lead against Cleveland State's Matt Kuelker, but lost the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Jaruvang won his first match in the Flight-A consolation bracket before falling to DePaul's Filip Dzenko 10-3 in the decisive third set.

Thomas Gans was IUPUI's entrant in the Flight-B draw and lost a closely contested two-setter to Fort Wayne's Jonathan Raa. Raa took the first set in the tiebreaker, 7-4, and the second set nearly went to a tiebreaker before Raa pulled out the win, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Gans won both of his matches in the consolation bracket to put his record on the season to 2-1.

Patrick O'Neill and Jake Hedderig each won their first match in Flights C and D respectively before falling in the round of 16. Akshay Verma, also in the Flight-D draw, lost his first match to Butler's Alex Woldmoe 6-2, 6-3 before winning both of his matches in the consolation bracket to advance to the consolation finals. There he fell in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0, to Josh Cogan of Washington University Saint Louis.

With a bye in the first round of the Flight-E draw, Jacob Bradley faced Case Western's Bas Van Lent in the round of 16. Bradley won the opening set in a tiebreaker, but couldn't hold on as Van Lent took the match 6-7, 6-3, 6-0.

IUPUI's doubles teams faired a little better with three teams - Verma and O'Neill in Flight A and Hedderig/Jaruvang and Manuel Laboy/Rudolph Frazier in Flight B - winning their opening matches, but unfortuntately neither team was able to advance past the second round.
