EVANSTON, Ill. – Kelly Wachtel continued her impressive play from the opening match against Miami (OH) by posting 14 kills and hitting .345 to lead the IUPUI volleyball team past South Florida, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23), Friday evening in the second match for both teams at the Wildcat Classic.

The win moved IUPUI to 2-0 for the tournament after defeating Miami (OH) earlier in the day, and upped its overall record to 6-8. The loss dropped USF to 5-8.

"Kelly did great the whole day with 15 kills and zero errors in the first match and then with 14 kills against USF," head coach Steve Payne said. "She capitalized on the match-ups she had and she delivered some big kills for us."

In addition to outhitting the Bulls, the Jaguars served up seven aces compared to just one for USF, including a career-high tying four aces from Meredith Farkas.

Eight ties and three lead changes occurred in early in set one until the Jags were able to piece together a small run. Trailing 12-11, IUPUI took advantage of two USF errors and added back-to-back blocks – a block from Kortni Wright and Kaitlyn Hickey and a solo block from Hickey - to seize a 15-12 advantage. The Bulls closed within one at 15-14, but the Jags methodically built their lead to four points, 21-17, before two more blocks, a Logan Walling ace and a Hickey kill closed out a 25-19 opening-set win.

Similar to the first set, the score remained close through the early stages of the second set until another IUPUI run gave it a lead it would not relinquish. Leading 12-11, a Wright kill started a 4-0 run that also featured another solo block from Hickey, a Farkas ace and a kill from Hickey. USF would close within two points at 19-17, but five kills and a Bulls error sent IUPUI to the 25-19 victory in set two.

After falling behind 7-2 in set three, three kills from Moriah Fair quickly helped the Jags pull even at 9-9. However, just as IUPUI mounted a comeback, USF retaliated by taking six of the next seven points to open a 15-10 lead, which forced Payne to use a timeout. The Jaguars battled all the way back within a point three more times before finally drawing even at 21-21. With the score tied at 22, Wachtel smashed back-to-back kills to give IUPUI two match points. After one of those opportunities was squandered, another Bulls miscue gave IUPUI the 25-23 third-set win to finish off the three-set sweep.

Defensively, Beth Howard led the way with 17 digs, and Wachtel added a team-high four total blocks.

"It's good to come out of a day with two wins and we did it in good fashion," Payne said. "We were down in some sets in both matches today and proved to ourselves that we can come back and win them."

IUPUI concludes the Wildcat Classic on Sunday, Sept. 22, when it takes on tournament host Northwestern at 2 p.m. ET.
