FORT WAYNE, Ind. – After coming up short against Kansas City in the previous two Summit League Championship matches, the IUPUI men’s tennis team hoped that its third title match-up against the Kangaroos would yield a different result. Unfortunately, UMKC defeated IUPUI 4-0, to win its third straight Summit League Tournament title and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

The loss ended IUPUI’s season with a 6-19 record, while Kansas City improved to 13-10.

To start doubles play, UMKC’s Grant Fleming and Abdul Alawadhi took control at the No. 1 doubles spot by taking a 4-1 lead, but the Jags countered with Jason Jaruvang and Jake Hedderig jumping out to a 4-0 lead at No. 3 doubles. The second doubles match was even through four games, but Kansas City slowly pulled away for an 8-4 win at the second position before Fleming and Alawadhi won by that same score at the top spot to clinch the doubles point for the Kangaroos.

Using that momentum from doubles, UMKC took commanding leads in five of the six singles matches and eventually took the first set in all six matches.

The sixth singles match pitting Armaan Choudhary and Connor Edwards was the first to finish with Edwards earning a 6-1, 6-1 win to tack on another point for Kansas City.

The Kangaroos inched within a point of victory when Andrey Smirnov downed Deon Shafer, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

Meanwhile, at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots, Nick Volz and Thomas Gans overcame their first-set defeats by winning their second sets, but moments later, Grant Fleming completed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hedderig to give Kansas City its third straight Summit League Tournament Championship.

Volz’s, Gans’ and Jaruvang’s matches all went unfinished.
