BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The IUPUI women's golf team put together a final round 304 at this weekend's Indiana Invitational on Sunday (Apr. 14), but still ultimately lost ground en route to a seventh-place finish among the 15-team field. The Jaguars closed the event at 931 (308-319-304), finishing three shots back of sixth-place Illinois State.

Host Indiana won the tournament at 890 and Kansas was second at 893. Eastern Michigan (917), Toledo (918) and Ball State (924) rounded out the event's top five.

"It was a much nicer day today and that's why scoring was so much better," IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews said. "I can't say I'm pleased with 304, but it's getting better.

"(Lauren) Kuss went out and battled. She's all heart. She played pretty well throughout. And I thought Ana (Fernandez de Mesa) played some really good golf today. She got to a couple under with three to go and hit some fantastic shots. She just didn't finish strong."

Kuss finished the tournament tied for sixth among the 85-player field at 8-over 224 (70-79-75) after a final round 75. Her 224 tied Kristi O'Brien for the school record while her first round 70 tied for the third-lowest 18-hole score in school history. Behind her, Fernandez de Mesa carded a 1-over 73 on Sunday and finished tied for 14th at 228 (75-80-73). Among the gallery watching Fernandez de Mesa were a pair of recent IUPUI signees, MeKenzie Hilsmeyer and Katie Smith.

"It was good for them to see Ana play, even though Ana most likely doesn't know who they are. I have no doubts they were impressed by what they saw today."

Seniors Jordan Woods and Jordan Essman finished tied for 47th at 241 and sophomore Yuri Otsuka rounded out the Jaguars' lineup at 241.

Fellow sophomore Olivia Kuss played as an individual this weekend and shot a 54-hole 253 (81-88-84).

Kuss continued to excel at the IU Varsity Course and earned her team-high sixth top 10 finish of the season.

With very few events left in the season, Andrews and the Jaguars are looking squarely at the upcoming Summit League Tournament on Apr. 22-24 at Sky Creek Ranch in Keller, Texas.

"I don't like putting all my eggs in one basket, but that's what we've done. Our only goal left is conference and our goal is to win it," Andrews said.

Before then, four Jaguars will play in the 18-hole UE/Butler Challenge at Sultan's Run in Jasper on Monday (Apr. 15) and the full squad has one remaining conference primer. The Jaguars will also play in the make-up of the Butler Spring Invitational at Prestwick Country Club in Avon on Apr. 18-19 of this week.
