INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – After earning a key Summit League victory on Friday against Fort Wayne, the IUPUI men’s tennis team stepped away from league action and played its final home non-conference match of the season on Saturday when it welcomed Detroit to the West Indy Racquet Club, but the Titans left with a 5-2 victory.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 5-17 on the season.
The Titans jumped out to the early one-point advantage by claiming the doubles point thanks to wins at the No. 3 and No. 1 doubles positions.
In singles play,
Jason Jaruvang came through with a hard fought 7-5, 6-3 win at the top of the ladder to give IUPUI its first point, but wins from Detroit at the second, third and fourth positions clinched the victory for Detroit.
Despite the Titans already having earned the victory,
Thomas Gans battled back from a first-set defeat to earn a 6-2 second-set win, sending the match to a third-set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Gans eked out a 10-8 win to pick up IUPUI’s second and final point of the night.
In the final singles match, Detroit earned the straight-set victory to finish off the 5-2 win.
The Jags are back in action on Sunday, April 14, when they close out their regular season against Summit League foe Western Illinois at 10 a.m. at the West Indy Racquet Club.
