THE SERIES WITH THE MAVERICKS
-
Saturday’s meeting between Omaha and IUPUI will be the second meeting all-time between the two schools.
-
IUPUI won the first meeting back on Jan. 10, 60-49, in Indianapolis thanks to 13 points apiece from Kerah Nelson and Katie Comello.
-
This will be the first meeting in Omaha.
LAST TIME OUT ...
-
Nicole Rogers hit a career-high six three pointers en route to a career-best 19 points leading the IUPUI women’s basketball team to a 65-30 win over Chicago State Tuesday evening at The Jungle.
-
Rogers was a catalyst during a lengthy Jags’ run that broke the game open and she was joined in double figures by Kerah Nelson, who added 14 points and six boards.
-
The Jaguars went on a 41-6 run that spanned from the 12:12 mark of the first half to the 9:50 mark of the second half sending IUPUI to its 13th win of the season. By improving to 13-9, the Jags equaled their win total from last year.
-
After starting 0-for-5 from the field, Chicago State quickly jumped in front by hitting their next five shots to take a 13-10 lead with 13:08 to play in the opening half.
-
38 seconds later, Rogers checked in and proceeded to spark an extensive run that seized control for IUPUI.
-
Two DeAirra Goss free throws with 12:12 on the clock brought IUPUI within a point, 13-12, which started a 27-6 run that lasted through the end of the half. During the run, Rogers buried four three’s and scored nearly half of the points during the run with 13 points, while Nelson chipped in eight to send the Jaguars into the locker room with a 37-19 advantage.
-
During the spurt, the Jags held the Cougars to 2-of-10 shooting from the floor and forced them into six turnovers.
-
While IUPUI struggled from the floor to start the final 20 minutes, the Jags defensive effort from the end of the first half carried into the second half. IUPUI held the Cougars scoreless for the first 10:11 of the first half while going on a 14-0 run to open a 51-19 lead.
-
From that point, the outcome was never in doubt and the Jags cruised to a 65-30 victory.
-
The most impressive part of IUPUI’s win, however, was its ability to share the ball. The Jags managed to record an assist on 21 of its 26 made field goals en route to shooting 44.1 percent for the game.
-
Alongside Rogers and Nelson, Clara Mitchell gave the Jags additional scoring with a season-high nine points.
ROGER THAT
-
After scoring nine combined points in her previous nine games, Nicole Rogers came off the bench and lifted the Jaguars to a 65-30 win over Chicago State on Tuesday, Feb. 5, with a career-high 19 points.
-
Rogers was 6-of-12 from the floor, all of which coming from behind-the-arc, which also set a career best for 3-point field goals made.
-
She became the first Jag since teammate Katie Comello to hit five or more three’s in a game after Comello also hit six triples on Jan. 14, 2012, in a win over Oral Roberts.
-
Rogers fell just shy of tying a school-record for most three’s hit by a freshman in the game. Shea Collins and Misty Norris share the IUPUI freshman record of three’s hit in a game as both hit seven.
-
This season, Rogers has now hit multiple three’s in six games.
DEFENSE WINS GAMES
-
Since head coach Austin Parkinson took over the IUPUI women’s basketball team, the team has prided itself on its effort on the defensive end of the floor.
-
Defense has been part of the reason the Jags improved from four wins in 2010-11, to 13 wins last year.
-
So far this season, defense has been the key to the Jags success in the first half of Summit League play.
-
In its six conference wins, the Jags are giving up an average of 52.7 ppg, while holding their opponents to 36.2 percent shooting and 20.4 percent shooting from three.
-
During the six wins, IUPUI has also dominated the glass outrebounding its opponents, 41.5 - 31.0.
-
In five of those six wins, the Jags have kept their opponents to 56 points or less.
-
In its three conference losses, however, IUPUI’s opponents have shot 54.7 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from three, and average 71.7 ppg.
-
Additionally, opponents are scoring 39.0 ppg in the paint in the Jags three losses and 9.3 ppg on fast breaks compared to 22.0 ppg in the paint and 1.7 ppg on fast breaks in IUPUI’s five league wins.
IN THE CLUTCH
-
Throughout the entire season, the Jags have struggled from the free throw line hitting just 65.4 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe.
-
That percentage ranks eighth in the Summit League and 264th nationally.
-
Despite the low percentage, IUPUI has been much better at the line when the game is on the line.
-
In its last game at Western Illinois, the Jags hit 12-of-14 free throws (85.7 %) in the final three minutes to preserve a 61-55 win.
-
On the season, in the final three minutes of games decided by 10 points or less, the Jaguars are hitting 78.6 percent of their free throw attempts.
-
Seven players are shooting above 75.0 percent during that time of the game, including three shooting a percent 1.000.
