CARMEL, Ind. – Behind a late rally from the No. 3 doubles tandem of Jason Jaruvang and Jake Hedderig and four singles wins, the IUPUI men’s tennis team claimed its first victory of the season Friday evening defeating Saint Louis, 5-2, at Five Seasons Sports Club in Carmel, Ind.

The win improved IUPUI to 1-8 on the season, while Saint Louis fell to 2-3.

Nick Volz and Jacob Bradley dominated at the top doubles spot with an 8-1 win to put IUPUI on the verge of winning the doubles point, but an 8-5 response by Saint Louis’ duo of Bobby Kidera and Drew Feder at the No. 2 doubles spot tied doubles action at one match apiece.

The Billikens looked to be in prime position to take the early lead with Luis Miguel Flores and Vuk Poledica taking a 6-1 advantage over Jaruvang and Hedderig in the final doubles match, but the freshmen duo battled back and claimed an 8-7 come-from-behind victory in a tiebreaker to give IUPUI all the momentum and the doubles point.

In singles action, Jaruvang continued his strong play from doubles by claiming a 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 1 singles spot.

The top of the Jaguars lineup followed Jaruvang’s lead with Volz winning a tight three-set match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at the second spot in addition to Deon Shafer emerging with a pair of 6-3 wins to win at the No. 3 position.

Thomas Gans suffered a tough third-set tiebreaker loss at the No. 4 spot and Joel Modesitt dropped a straight-set decision at the fifth position, but Louis Sacks concluded singles action with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the last singles match.

The Jaguars will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, Feb. 10, when they travel to nearby Muncie, Ind., to meet Ball State. Sunday’s match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
