SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The IUPUI men’s tennis team took on its second straight ranked opponent on Sunday and the No. 30 Notre Dame Fighting Irish went on to defeat the Jags, 7-0.
 
The Fighting Irish jumped out to the quick one-point advantage following a pair of wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, and their success continued in singles play.
 
In singles action, Notre Dame won four of the six matches in straight sets, but the Jags were able to force third sets in two of the three matches to put them on the verge of capturing a pair of points.
 
Wyatt McCoy gave Notre Dame its first win in singles action downing Thomas Gans, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, before Greg Andrews defeated Nick Volz, 6-2, 6-0, to put the Fighting Irish a point away from victory.
 
UND was able to earn wins at the sixth spot and the fourth spot to clinch the team win, but the Jaguars kept fighting. Despite the outcome already being determined, Jason Jaruvang and Joel Modesitt each took their matches to third-set tiebreakers.
 
Jaruvang overcame a 6-1 first-set loss by earning a 6-4 win in the second-set and looked to carry that momentum into the third set against the 110th-ranked player in the country in Blas Moros. However, Jaruvang was unable to string anything together in the tiebreaker and fell, 10-4.
 
In the other match, Modesitt sprinted out to the quick lead with a 6-3 first-set win, but he was forced into a third-set tiebreaker following a 6-4 win from Michael Dooley. The tiebreaker was neck-and-neck and was even extended a few points, but Dooley emerged with a 12-10 win to finish off the 7-0 win for the Irish.
 
IUPUI returns to action on Friday, Feb. 8, when it hosts Saint Louis at the Five Seasons Sports Club in Carmel, Ind., at 3 p.m.
