Friday Final Results
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Three more school records fell on Day 3 of the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships helping the IUPUI men’s swimming and diving team stay in third place.
Oakland still leads with 707 points through 37 events, while South Dakota State sits in second with 342 points. The Jags are the other team sitting above 300 points with 301 points.
“The guys have been up and down but the fact is that we are still within striking distance and that’s all we could really ask for,” head coach
Matt Bos said.
To start the morning prelims,
Alexander Rhoda and
Jose Serra advanced to the evening finals in the 400 IM with Rhoda earning a spot in the ‘A’ final and Serra claiming a spot in the ‘B’ final. Rhoda clocked in at 4:08.86, while Serra posted a time of 4:16.81.
The Jags proceeded from there to place three swimmers -
John Kamphuis,
Kevin Lunte and
CJ Howard - in the ‘B’ final of 100 fly with times of 51.71, 53.04 and 53.37, respectively. Kamphuis’ time moved him into fifth in the IUPUI record books in the event.
The Jags made their biggest impact in the morning in the 200 freestyle with
Tony Carroll and
Rich Sunkel both making the ‘A’ final. Carroll and Sunkel posted the second- and fifth-best times, respectively, in school history at 1:40.52 and 1:41.84.
IUPUI positioned itself for another solid point total in the 100 breast with
Adam Ferguson advancing to the ‘A’ final at 58.11, while
Ben Weingart notched a great performance with a time of 58.51 to make the ‘B’ final. Weingart’s time moved him into third place on the IUPUI charts in the event.
To conclude the individual morning swimming prelims,
Andrew Saunders, Kamphuis and Lunte all moved on to the evening ‘B’ final in the 100 back after placing 13th, 14th and 15th in the prelims.
The 400 IM final was the first evening final and the Jaguars received a sixth-place showing from Rhoda and a 15th-place finish from Serra. Rhoda was timed at 4:07.64, equaling the fifth-best mark in the IUPUI record books.
Kamphuis led a ninth-, 13th- and 15th-place finish by the Jags in the 100 fly with the third-best time in school history at 51.06. Howard earned the 13th-place showing at 52.84, while Lunte finished with a time of 53.20.
After not having anybody in the ‘A’ final of the 100 fly, Carroll and Sunkel were both in the top race of the 200 free. Carroll swam to a third-place finish and broke his own school record that he previously set on Wednesday with a time of 1:38.35. Sunkel placed sixth overall with a personal-best time of 1:41.63.
Ferguson and Weingart both added more points for IUPUI in the 100 breast with times of 58.17 and 58.76 to finish eighth and 12th, respectively.
In the final men’s individual swimming event, the 100 back, the Jags had three athletes compete in the ‘B’ final with Kamphuis earning the top finish for the Jags – a 12th-place time of 52.74, which also moved him into ninth in the IUPUI record books in the event.
To finish off the day, the 400 medley relay squad placed fourth in a new school-record time as Carroll, Ferguson, Kamphuis and Sunkel timed in at 3:25.41. Additionally, Carroll’s opening leg in the 100 back also set a new school-record as he touched the wall in 50.75.
“Tony has been feeling good and went into this morning feeling confident and he came in tonight and put everything into that 200 free,” Bos said. “For him, he’s about where he really needs to be at this point in his career and with two years left, he is getting better and better and this is just the beginning for him.”
The Jags conclude the 2013 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, Feb. 23. Prelims are set for 11 a.m., with finals set to begin at 6 p.m.
