Day 1 Results
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The IUPUI men’s swimming and diving team broke three school records in two events to kick off the 2013 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday evening at the OU Aquatics Center.
After Day 1, IUPUI is tied for fourth with 58 points, while Oakland leads the way with 80 points. Eastern Illinois and South Dakota State are tied for second with 64 points each, while South Dakota is tied with the Jags in fourth.
“We looked good and it was good to see our guys swim the way they did,” head coach
Matt Bos said. “Tony getting off to a great start in the 800 freestyle relay was good to see, and the nice part is we think he can go faster than he did. I think we are in a good spot going into tomorrow”
To start the championships, the Jags set a new school record in the 200 medley relay, but placed sixth. The team of
Andrew Saunders,
Adam Ferguson,
Kevin Lunte and
Mason Hamilton timed in at 1:34.87, breaking the school record set at last year’s Summit League Championships.
The Jaguars rebounded in the 800 freestyle relay placing third with another school-record mark. In the opening leg,
Tony Carroll became the first swimmer in IUPUI history to break the 1:40 plateau in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.70, which put the Jags in first following the opening 200.
Rich Sunkel,
Alex Rhoda and
Luke Green followed Carroll in the 800 freestyle relay and they collectively timed in at 6:50.96, setting a new school record by just over a full second.
The Jaguars continue the conference championships on Thursday, Feb. 21. Preliminaries will begin at 11 a.m., and Thursday’s finals are set to start at 6 p.m.
