MEN'S TENNIS CLAIMS FIRST ROAD WIN WITH 4-3 VICTORY OVER DAYTON

Jags sweep doubles and earned singles wins from Jaruvang, Sacks and Gans

DAYTON, Ohio – Playing its final match before a two-week lay-off, the IUPUI men's tennis team played some of its best doubles play of the season and it proved to be the difference as the Jags defeated the Dayton Flyers, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in Dayton, Ohio.

The win upped the Jags record to 2-9, while Dayton fell to 2-4 overall.

"We played very solid doubles today. We took care of our serves and showed what we can do," head coach Brandon Currie said. "We didn't play our best singles, but we battled and found a way to get the win."

All three doubles matches were determined by the slimmest of margins, but IUPUI came out on top in all three matches. At the top spot, Jacob Bradley and Nick Volz teamed up for an 8-6 win, and another 8-6 win followed for IUPUI at the No. 3 doubles spot for Jason Jaruvang and Jake Hedderig.

Unlike the first two doubles matches, the No. 2 doubles match needed an extra game to determine the winner. Patrick O'Neill and Deon Shafer were taking on Andrew Hanley and Robert Salcedo and after the Shafer and O'Neill went up 8-7, the Jags duo closed out the set with a win in the extra game to finish off a 9-7 victory.

In singles play, every match was tight except for one. Louis Sacks' match at the sixth position was the only one that was not close as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Unfortunately for the Jags, they lost tough decisions at the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots, but Jaruvang and Thomas Gans ultimately came through to give IUPUI the win.

In a back-and-forth affair, Jaruvang was able to win a pair of tiebreakers to claim a straight-set win over Aidan Koross, while Gans rallied from a 6-3 first-set loss with a pair of 6-3 wins to defeat Colin Bernier and give the Jaguars the win.

IUPUI will have two weeks off before returning to action on Sunday, March 3, against Butler and Northern Illinois at the Butler Bubble on Butler's campus.
