ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
-
The Jackrabbits have won 13 of their last 14 games, with their only loss during that stretch coming at home to the Jaguars on Jan. 19.
-
SDSU has two players scoring in double figures led by sophomore Megan Waytashek’s 14.4 ppg. Ashley Eide is the other double-figure scorer pouring in 13.8 ppg.
-
On the season, South Dakota State is shooting 41.9 percent from the floor, 34.4 percent from three and 69.3 percent from the line. The Jackrabbits are tops in the conference in field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage.
-
SDSU is second in the conference in rebounding margin, outrebounding its opponents by +5.2 rebounds per game.
-
The Jackrabbits are an explosive offensive squad with three players hitting more than 20 three’s this season. Waytashek has hit a team-best 50, while shooting 45.0 percent, and Eide has hit 43 at a 38.1 percent clip.
THE SERIES WITH THE JACKRABBITS
-
Saturday’s meeting will be the 14th all-time between the two schools.
-
South Dakota State leads the series, 12-1, winning the first 12 meetings.
-
However, IUPUI claimed its first win over SDSU on Jan. 19, by a score of 57-56 in Frost Arena. That win snapped the Jackrabbits 17-game conference home winning streak.
LAST TIME OUT ...
-
In a defensive struggle, Kerah Nelson made a running lay-up across the lane with one second to go to give IUPUI a 45-43 win over Omaha Saturday afternoon (Feb. 9) in a key Summit League contest at Ralston Arena.
-
With the win, IUPUI improved to 14-9 overall and 7-3 in the conference, while Omaha dipped to 16-8 overall and 6-6 in the conference. Additionally, IUPUI surpassed its win total from last year and earned a season sweep over the league-newcomer Mavericks.
-
On a night where IUPUI shot just 29.1 percent from the floor, the Jaguars were led offensively by Nevena Markovic, who scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. DeAirra Goss added 10 points and Nelson finished with eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
-
The Jaguars’ offensive execution at the end of each half led to baskets proving to be the difference in the outcome.
-
The Jags defense held Omaha to just four points in the opening 6:30 and jumped out to an 11-4 lead. However, a 9-0 response from the 12:29 mark to 10:00 mark of the opening 20 minutes gave the Mavericks a 13-11 advantage.
-
Down the stretch of the first half, three lead changes ensued resulting in a 19-18 IUPUI lead, but a Markovic tip-in with one second to go in the half sent the Jaguars into the half with a 21-18 lead.
-
After IUPUI grew its lead to five out of the half on a Goss lay-up with 18:04 remaining, the rest of the half went back-and-forth.
-
Nine lead changes and two ties followed over the next 15:24 resulting in Omaha owning a 41-40 lead with 2:40 to go.
-
A pair of Katie Comello free throws with 1:50 remaining preceded Goss splitting a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left to place IUPUI back in front by two, 43-41, but Paige Frauendorfer buried a jumper from the right elbow with 25 seconds to play to knot the score at 43.
-
IUPUI held the ball for the last shot and after working the ball to the left side of the floor, Nelson received a pass at the elbow from Comello and drove across the lane to hit a lay-up with one second on the clock to put IUPUI in front, 45-43.
-
Omaha made one last attempt to tie things up, but a full-court pass sailed out of bounds and clinched the two-point Jags victory.
WINNING WAYS
-
With IUPUI’s win at Omaha on Feb. 9, the Jags accomplished a few feats that they had not experienced in some time.
-
First, the win gave the Jaguars 14 wins on the season, surpassing last season’s win total. Since taking over the program, head coach Austin Parkinson has now led IUPUI to more wins than they had the previous year in each of his three seasons.
-
The two-point win over the Mavericks also gave IUPUI its third straight win on the road, marking the first time since the end of the 2008-09 season that the Jags accomplished that feat.
-
If IUPUI was to pick up a win on Thursday, it would extend its winning streak to four, marking the longest win streak since winning four during the 2007-08 season from Feb. 25 - March 10.
BOOST OFF THE BENCH
-
Sophomore forward Nevena Markovic, who was IUPUI’s third-leading scorer a year ago, has been a big boost off the bench for IUPUI over the last five games.
-
It took Markovic some time to get back into game form after missing seven games in December because of an injury.
-
Starting with IUPUI’s Jan. 24 game against UMKC, Markovic has been averaging 8.8 ppg and 4.6 rpg over the last five games, up from her season averages of 5.1 ppg and 4.1 rpg. She has reached this production in just 14.4 minutes per game.
-
During that stretch, the 6-4 sophomore forward has also shot at a high clip connecting on 61.6 (16-of-26) percent of her shot attempts, including 37.5 percent of her three’s (3-of-8).
