MUNCIE, Ind. – Coming off its first win of the season against Saint Louis on Friday, the IUPUI men’s tennis team looked to build upon that momentum on Sunday at Ball State, but the Cardinals swept the Jaguars 7-0 at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.

In doubles play, the Jags top duo of Jacob Bradley and Nick Volz lost a tough doubles contest, 8-6, placing IUPUI one loss away from dropping the opening point, but Patrick O'Neill and Deon Shafer came back with an 8-5 win at the second doubles spot.

However, the home team emerged with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles to take the 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for IUPUI, the win from O’Neill and Shafer in doubles would be the only victory of the day as Ball State won all six singles matches, but the No. 1, 2 and 3 matches all were tightly contested.

Jason Jaruvang went down by scores of 7-5, 7-6, in the No. 1 singles match, which included a 7-3 loss in the second-set tiebreaker. Volz was in both of his sets at the No. 2 spot, but a tough loss in the opening-set tiebreaker was followed by a 7-5 loss in the second set.

The only match to go three sets occurred at the No. 3 spot between Shafer and Patrick Elliott. Shafer cruised to a 6-1 first-set win before dropping a tight second-set, 7-6, courtesy of a 7-5 loss in the tiebreaker. In the third-set tiebreaker, both Shafer and Elliott went back-and-forth and both players had opportunities to claim the set, but Elliott eventually took the tiebreaker, 13-11, to win the match.

In the final three matches, IUPUI fell in straight-set decisions to give the Cardinals a 7-0 victory.

IUPUI is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 16, when they travel to Dayton, Ohio, to take on the Dayton Flyers at 2 p.m.
