LAST TIME OUT ...
-
Three players scored in double figures, led by DeAirra Goss' 24 points, leading IUPUI basketball team to an 86-63 win over Northern Kentucky Wednesday evening at The Jungle.
-
Following a 1-for-13 shooting performance in a six-point loss to Indiana on Sunday, Goss responded with 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting to pace the Jags offensively. Dawn Luster and Nicole Rogers each chipped in 12 points, and Luster's double-figure scoring outing was her first in her last 17 outings. Thanks in part to Goss' hot shooting, IUPUI (8-4) collectively shot 64.2 percent from the floor setting a new school record for highest field goal percentage in a game.
-
IUPUI got off to a slow start and trailed by one point with two minutes remaining in the first half, but the Jaguars flipped the switch defensively leading to a 10-3 run to close the half. IUPUI continued that momentum and outscored the Norse by 17 in the second half to cruise to the victory.
-
Northern Kentucky, who entered the game shooting 29.9 percent from three, connected on its first three attempts in the first 12 minutes helping it take a 25-19 lead. Luster kept the Jags close scoring eight points during that stretch, including four in transition and another off an offensive rebound.
-
The NKU lead reached seven at 33-26 with 4:43 to play, but a 7-0 IUPUI response over the next 2:45, highlighted by a Caitlyn Tolen three from the right baseline, tied the score with just under two minutes to play in the opening half.
-
Following a Norse free throw, the Jags became more active on the defensive end leading them on a 10-3 run over the final 1:33 to take a 43-37 lead into the half.
-
Goss went a perfect 6-of-6 from the field in the first half to lead the Jags with 15 points, while Luster added 10. IUPUI and Northern Kentucky both shot 66.7 percent from the field and from three in the first half, and that marked the Jags best shooting first half of the season.
-
Out of the half, Goss continued her hot shooting from the floor scoring five of IUPUI's first six points to bump its lead up to nine points, 48-39, forcing NKU to burn a timeout less than three minutes in.
-
The lead grew to 17 points, 62-45, midway through the second half off Rogers' third three of the game, this time from the right wing, before the cushion reached 23, 72-49, with six minutes left off back-to-back buckets from Shanika Maddox and Luster.
-
From that point, the Jags finished off an 86-63 win.
RECORD NIGHT
-
In IUPUI's 23-point win over Northern Kentucky on Wednesday, IUPUI shot a single-game school-record 64.2 percent from the floor against the Norse.
-
The Jaguars were led offensively by DeAirra Goss, who hit 10-of-11 field goals to lead the team.
-
In addition to Goss, Nicole Rogers and Dawn Luster also scored in double figures with 12 points apiece.
-
All 11 players that played scored, and 10 of the 11 players made a field goal.
-
In addition to shooting 64.2 percent from the floor, IUPUI hit 50.0 percent of its three's, and connected on 76.5 percent of its free throws.
FOR THE FIRST TIME ...
-
The Summit League announced its weekly women's basketball Player of the Week honors on Dec. 16 and senior guard Dee-Dee Bellamy and South Dakota State senior guard Steph Paluch shared the conference's weekly award.
-
It marked the first time in her career that Bellamy had been named the conference's player of the week.
-
Bellamy started the week scoring 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting as the Jags earned their first-ever win at Indiana State, the Missouri Valley Conference preseason favorites. She also added five rebounds, four steals and two assists against the Sycamores, and put the Jags ahead for good with a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds.
-
The Detroit, Mich.-native then followed that with eight points, six rebounds, four blocks, three steals and two assists in a six-point loss to undefeated Indiana. In addition to her career-high four blocks, Bellamy also held Indiana's Larryn Brooks, the fourth-ranked scorer in the Big Ten, to 2-of-16 shooting from the floor.
-
For the week, the 5-6 guard averaged 10.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.5 spg, 2.5 bpg and 2.0 apg, while shooting 44.0 percent from the floor.
MAKING HER MARK
-
Junior forward Nevena Markovic got off to a slow start this season scoring just 25 points combined in the Jaguars first four games.
-
Since scoring 22 points in her hometown of Chicago against Chicago State on Nov. 23, Markovic has been IUPUI's leading scorer.
-
The 6-4 forward hit 9-of-14 shots against the Cougars en route to 22 points, and has followed that up by scoring in double digits in five of IUPUI's last seven games.
-
During this six-game stretch, Markovic leads the way with 12.0 ppg, and she is shooting 48.7 percent (38-of-78) from the floor.
-
Markovic has also been almost automatic from the line during this stretch hitting 16-of-17 (.941).
-
Not only does she lead the team in scoring since that Chicago State contest, but Markovic also leads the team in rebounding during this span averaging 5.6 rpg.
-
In the Jags first-ever win over Indiana State, Markovic scored a team-high 14 points and added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
X-FACTOR
-
The three-ball has been an X-Factor for the Jags this season as they are 3-0 when hitting at least six, but just 5-4 when not reaching that mark.
-
More specifically, the Jags are 6-0 this season when their top 3-point threat hits multiple three's.
-
After hitting 31.4 percent of her three's last season, Nicole Rogers is shooting at a 39.7-percent clip this season and she has hit a three in all 12 games this season.
-
Rogers has played in 41 career games for IUPUI, and she has hit multiple three's in 14 of those 41 games, including a career-high six against Chicago State last season.
-
The Jags are 12-2 when Rogers hits multiple three's, with their last loss coming at Indiana on Nov. 23, 2012.
