Heather's Voice Donation Ticket for Friday, Nov. 15
INDIANAPOLIS – This weekend serves as the final weekend of the 2013 volleyball regular-season and the IUPUI volleyball team closes out its regular-season at home against North Dakota State and South Dakota State.
The Jaguars, who currently sit in a tie for first place in The Summit League, welcome the Bison to The Jungle on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., before hosting the Jackrabbits at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.
IUPUI and South Dakota enter the final weekend of the regular season tied for first in the conference standings at 9-3, while Denver and IPFW sit at 8-4 and 7-5, respectively. While the Jags and Mastodons host NDSU and SDSU on Friday and Saturday, the Coyotes and Pioneers will be traveling to Omaha and Western Illinois on Friday and Sunday.
"The team has worked hard all season to get in the position to be able to play for another regular-season championship this weekend, and we are excited to have this opportunity," head coach
Steve Payne said. "We will have to play our best against two very good teams in NDSU and SDSU to reach our goal of a championship."
This weekend's matches against the Bison and the Jackrabbits will be the final regular-season home games for IUPUI's three seniors -
Alexis Meeks,
Moriah Fair and
Kortni Wright. Going into the weekend, the trio has been a part of 60 wins, they have helped the Jaguars put together a 15-match Summit League home winning streak, and they helped IUPUI claim its first regular-season Summit League Championship last season. With two wins this weekend, they will secure at least a share of another regular-season conference championship. Prior to the start of Saturday's match, all three seniors will be honored for their contributions to the program.
"It has been pleasure knowing and coaching these seniors these past years and watching them become great volleyball players, students and people," Payne added. "This senior class has been a part of our most successful seasons and that is mainly due to their hard work and dedication to the program."
Following a loss at IPFW last weekend that halted IUPUI's nine-match league winning streak, the Jags open the weekend against a North Dakota State team that has won four of its last five to improve to 6-6 in the conference. The Bison are led offensively by Jenni Fassbender's 3.47 kps, which ranks fifth in the conference. In league-only action, Fassbender's kills per set average has risen to 4.05, which ranks third, and she is hitting at a .253 clip. Defensively, Emily Milligan ranks second in league in digs per set (4.15 dps).
The Jackrabbits are 3-9 after winning their last two matches over Omaha and Western Illinois. Wagner Larson leads the team in kills averaging 2.56 kps in league play, while Tiara Gibson isn't far behind with 2.26 kps. Gibson, however, ranks second in the league in hitting percentage in league-only matches (.365), while also leading the team in blocking with 0.88 bps.
Friday's match against NDSU will be Heather's Voice Night for the Jaguars. Heather's Voice is an organization that aims to educate teens about dating violence and domestic abuse. Throughout the day on Friday, Nov. 15, the Jaguars encourage fans to go to The Stacked Pickle located at 910 W. 10th St., in Indianapolis. Fans who present this
donation ticket will have 10% of the total food sales go directly to Heather's Voice.
