INDIANAPOLIS – For the third consecutive match, the IUPUI offense was clicking on all cylinders leading the Jaguars to a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-20, 25-18) over in-state rival IPFW Saturday evening at The Jungle.
Saturday's match was the Jaguars Breast Cancer Awareness match benefiting Ribbon Chicks, a not-for-profit organization co-founded by former Jaguar volleyball player Jen Mertz Will. IUPUI wore its pink jerseys in support of Ribbon Chicks and ultimately improved to 9-11 overall and 3-2 in the Summit League.
Alexis Meeks dished out 38 assists and led the offense to a .272 hitting percentage that was spearheaded by
Moriah Fair and
Kelly Wachtel. Fair put down a match-high 14 kills thanks to hitting .321, while Wachtel added 11 kills on a .360 clip.
"Our offense was clicking and once again our passing started off well, and Alexis did a great job tonight distributing that ball and putting it right on the money," head coach Steve Payne said. "Our hitters worked a lot in practice on putting the ball away using the blockers hands."
IUPUI scored its first five points on the match on four kills and an ace as it jumped in front, 5-3, and once the Jags took that two point lead they remained in control for the remainder of the set. After the Jaguars lead grew to six points at 18-12, the Mastodons made a run to close within two at 20-18, but kills down the stretch from Wachtel and
Meredith Farkas finished off a 25-20 first-set win.
While the Jags controlled the action in the first set, the second set was much tighter featuring nine ties and three lead changes. The ninth and final tie occurred at 16-16, until two Mastodons errors coupled with a
Kortni Wright solo block and a Fair kill placed the Jaguars in front, 20-16. With the score still in IUPUI's favor at 23-20, kills from Fair and Wachtel closed out another 25-20 win.
Out of the 10-minute intermission, an Emily Spencer kill put the Mastodons in front, 1-0, before three straight IUPUI points made the score 3-1. Following the Jags brief three-point surge, their lead failed to grow past two until a five-point run highlighted by kills from Fair, Hickey and Wachtel broke open an 18-17 lead into a 23-17 cushion. Following a Mastodons side out, a kill by Hickey gave IUPUI match point, and the Jags finished the match off on the defensive end of the floor picking up a block from Wright and Wachtel on a Kendall Wienkes attack to stamp shut a 25-18 third-set win.
Spencer and Wienkes lead IPFW offensively with 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
The Jags close out their four-match homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 15, when they welcome Valparaiso to The Jungle for a 7 p.m. match. Tuesday's match will be televised on Home Town Sports Network and Greg Rakestraw will have the call.
