INDIANAPOLIS - Tempestt Wilson scored 26 points and South Dakota shot 61.1% from the floor leading the Coyotes to a 76-56 win over the IUPUI women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at the Jungle.
The loss drops the Jags to 5-3 in the Summit League and 11-9 overall for the season, while South Dakota improves to 6-2 in the conference and 11-10 overall.
"Well we have to regroup and we have to figure out some things on offense," said head coach Austin Parkinson. "Bottom line is when the other team is making shots and you have empty trips, it's going to be a tough night. They played really well - they are a good basketball team – and they came in here ready to play."
Katie Comello led the Jags with 14 points and joining her in double digits were
DeAirra Goss and
Jordan Barton with 10 points each.
The first half featured four runs, three from the Coyotes and only one from the Jags. The Jags sprinted out to an 8-0 lead during the first four minutes, thanks to four points each from Comello, and Goss. Despite the quick start, South Dakota responded with a 12-0 run of its own from the 16:16 mark to the 13:11 mark to catapult in front, 12-8.
After a pair of
Akilah Sims free throws put the Jaguars back in front, 15-14, at the midway point of first half, another Coyotes run over a 1:55 stretch pushed the USD advantage to 22-15 with 8;04 on the clock.
IUPUI closed with four with 5'45 to play on a
Clara Mitchell lay-up, but from that point on the Jaguars went scoreless for the remainder of the half. The Coyotes closed out the half on a 12-0 run and took a 38-22 lead into the half.
After the half the Jaguars made a few quick buckets to trim their halftime deficit to 13, but that was as close as they would get. Down the stretch IUPUI got several good looks but the Jags were unable to close within striking distance and ultimately fell 76-56.
IUPUI returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when it heads to Macomb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. ET.
