MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The IUPUI men's tennis team dropped a tight 6-1 decision at Marquette on Friday night at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The loss dropped the Jaguars to 0-5 on the young season.

Marquette (1-1) seized early momentum, claiming the doubles point on the decisive third match. MU's Dan Mamalat and Vukasin Teofanovic made quick work of IUPUI's Patrick O'Neill and Jason Jaruvang at the No. 1 doubles spot, but the Jaguars knotted doubles play with a win at No. 3. The tandem of Thomas Gans and Deon Shafer scratched out an 8-5 win over David Packowitz and James Stark, leaving the initial point up to the No. 2 doubles match.

Unfortunately for the Jags, Cameron Tehrani and Logon Collins got the better of Jacob Bradley and Joel Modesitt by an 8-6 outcome.

In singles play, Marquette got straight sets wins in four of the six matches, although the bottom two spots in the lineup came down to first set tiebreakers.

Teofanovic cruised past Gans at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2 and Tehrani defeated Louis Sacks at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2. MU's Gleb Sklyr claimed the decisive match with a win at No. 5 over senior Armaan Choudhary, 7-6, 6-3.

With the match in hand, MU's Packowitz defeated Modesitt 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot in the lineup while the other two courts split sets.

Mamalat eventually outlasted Jaruvang, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the top spot, leaving just Shafer. The scrappy Shafer refused to allow the Jaguars to be blanked and fought for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Collins at No. 3 to earn his first singles win of the season. The Warsaw, Ind.-native missed the start of the spring season due to injury.

IUPUI is slated to return to action on Sunday (Jan. 27) when the Jaguars take on Green Bay in Milwaukee at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
