INDIANAPOLIS – For the second time in three matches, the IUPUI men’s tennis team jumped out to early first-set leads only to watch its leads disappear as SIU-Edwardsville overcame losing the doubles point to defeat the Jaguars, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the West Indy Racquet Club.

The loss dropped IUPUI to 0-3 on the young season, while the Cougars improved to 1-0.

“Having a lead and being able to finish has been a problem so far and something we need to continue to work on. We really need to look towards our leadership to guide the younger guys on what it takes in dual matches to win,” head coach Brandon Currie said. “What we have to figure out right now is who are the best six competitors. You are not always going to play well, so on your worst day are you still able to figure out a way to win – that’s really what it comes down to.”

The Jags got out to the early lead as Jason Jaruvang and #Patrick O’Neill# took the No. 1 doubles match, 8-6, before Joel Modesitt and Thomas Gans came through at the No. 3 doubles spot with an 8-5 victory to send the Jaguars to a 1-0 lead.

All six singles matches followed and the Cougars were able to tie the match at 1-1 after Modesitt fell at the No. 5 position, 0-6, 1-6.
Louis Sacks placed IUPUI back in front with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 6 spot, but the back-and-forth action continued with O’Neill and Jacob Bradley falling 5-7, 3-6 and 6-4, 2-6, 3-6, respectively.

With two matches left, Thomas Gans emerged victorious due to retirement from his competitor to tie the score at three, but minutes later, Marten Jonsson broke Jaruvang in the third set of their match to pick up the 6-4 third-set win and give the Cougars a 4-3 victory.

The Jaguars return to action on Sunday, Jan. 20, when they host Xavier at 5 p.m. at the West Indy Racquet Club.
