WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The IUPUI men’s tennis team opened its spring season Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center on the campus of Purdue University, but the Jaguars suffered a 6-1 loss to Toledo, before falling 7-0 to Purdue.

The Jags fell behind early in both matches dropping the doubles point, but the Jags had some early success against the Rockets.

IUPUI jumped out to first-set leads in four of the six singles matches only to drop the first set in three of those four matches. The only player who won his opening set against the Rockets was Louis Sacks, who cruised to a 6-2 first-set win at the No. 6 spot, before completing the straight-sets win with a 6-3 triumph in the second set.

Nick Volz held a 5-1 lead in the first set of his match at the No. 2 spot, but from that point Volz could not string together another rally as he fell, 7-5, 6-0.

At the top of the lineup, Jason Jaruvang fell by scores of 6-4, 6-3, while Thomas Gans and Jacob Bradley also dropped 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2 decisions at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively.

Joel Modesitt was able to rally back from 7-6 opening-set loss at the No. 5 position by claiming a 6-2 second-set win to force a third-set tiebreaker. However, Modesitt came up on the short end of a 10-6 decision in the third-set tiebreaker.

In the nightcap against the Boilermakers, the Jags fell behind losing a pair of tightly contested doubles matches prior to singles play.

In singles action, Purdue was able to claim straight-set wins in all six matches to close out the 7-0 victory.

The Jags are back in action on Friday, Jan. 18, when they welcome SIU-Edwardsville to the West Indy Racquet Club for a match that begins at 11:30 a.m.
