FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Looking for its first 3-0 Summit League start since 2009, the IUPUI volleyball team got off to a good start winning the first set, but IPFW responded winning the next three sets to defeat IUPUI, 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 21-25), Tuesday evening.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the league, while IPFW upped its record to 11-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The first set was tightly contested in the early stages and carried into the late portion of the set. With IUPUI holding on to a one-point lead, 17-16, kills by
Bethany Fogler and
Moriah Fair, and a block from Fogler and
Kelly Wachtel gave the Jags the advantage at 20-16. With its lead cut in half at 23-21, back-to-back kills from
Kaitlyn Hickey closed out a 25-21 opening-set win for the Jags.
IPFW responded in set two jumping out to a 9-3 lead. The Mastodons lead grew to 11 at 20-9, but the Jags fought back within four points at 23-19. Unfortunately, a kill followed by an IUPUI attack error gave IPFW the 25-19 set-two win, evening the match at a set apiece.
Out of the break, both teams jockeyed for the lead but remained even at 16 until a six-point IPFW run busted open a 22-16 cushion. Six consecutive side outs ensued finishing off another 25-19 win for the Mastodons.
Needing to get out to a good start in the fourth set, three Jaguars errors plagued IUPUI as it trailed 7-3, forcing head coach
Steve Payne to burn a timeout. IUPUI closed within three points multiple times, but each time IPFW responded with a side out and kept its advantage between four and five points. The Jags again closed within three points at 24-21 following a Fogler kill, but IPFW responded with a kill of its own to close out a 25-21 fourth-set win finishing off the win.
Kelsey Hoefer led the Jaguars with 15 kills, while Hickey added 13 kills. Hickey led the team with a career-high 23 digs, her second consecutive 20-plus dig effort. Additionally,
Alexis Meeks added a double-double with 32 assists and 15 digs.
Defensively, Fogler added six blocks to lead all players.
The Jaguars continue their road trip this weekend when they head to South Dakota State and North Dakota State on Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22, respectively. Both matches are set to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
