DETROIT – After dropping its first Summit League match of the season a night earlier, the IUPUI men’s tennis team rebounded with a hard-fought 5-2 win Saturday afternoon at the Titan Tennis Complex.
 
The win moved IUPUI to 10-14 on the season, marking the Jags first 10-win season since the 2003-04 campaign.
 
In doubles play, each match was tight, but the Jags prevailed at the top. Luke Bielawski and #Patrick O’Neill# found themselves in a tiebreaker to determine the winner of their No. 1 doubles match and the duo prevailed, 10-5, in the tiebreaker to put the Jags another doubles victory away from claiming the doubles point. The win for Bielawski and O’Neill was even more crucial considering Detroit had already earned the victory at the No. 3 doubles spot.
 
To close out doubles, IUPUI’s No. 2 tandem of Nick Volz and Joel Modesitt came through late to earn a 9-7 victory giving IUPUI the early one-point lead.
 
The lead reversed in singles play as Detroit won the No. 5 and No.  4 matches in straight sets to find itself up by a point, 2-1, but from that point the Jags took over.
 
Chase Emerson was the next to finish at the No. 2 spot and he easily downed his opponent by identical 6-2 scores knotting the score at 2-2. That was followed by Deon Shafer earning a straight-sets win at the three spot to put the Jags a point away from victory.
 
In the remaining matches, it didn’t look good for IUPUI early as Ivan Mojsejev and Thomas Gans each fell behind early losing their first sets at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions, respectively. However, Mojsejev battled out a 9-7 win in the second-set tiebreaker to win set two, 7-6, and it was smooth sailing from there as he won his third set by a 6-3 score and Gans claimed back-to-back 6-3 wins in his second and third sets to finish off the 5-2 win.
 
The Jags conclude their regular season on Sunday, April 22, when it travels to nearby Muncie, Ind., to take on Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo.
