INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men's tennis team had failed to claim a victory over crosstown rival Butler until last season, but following a close 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday (March 31) evening at the Butler Bubble the Jags now have claimed consecutive victories over Butler for the first time in program history.
 
"This was one of the most exciting tennis matches I've been a part of," said head coach Brandon Currie. "The match had everything you would want – talented players on both sides and emotion from start to finish. Butler is a talented team, but we showed a lot of fight coming back the way they did."
 
The Jags did not get off to the start they had hoped falling in all three doubles matches allowing Butler to take the early 1-0 lead.
 
Only playing four courts at a time in singles play, Butler jumped out to a 3-1 lead taking victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, while Chase Emerson claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the fourth spot.
 
With Ivan Mojsejev's match still going at the No. 2 position, Deon Shafer emerged victorious at the No. 5 spot winning 6-1, 6-3, before Mojsejev concluded his three-set marathon on the winning side of a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 decision to even the match at 3-3.
 
The match came down to the sixth position between Louis Sacks and Stephen McLoughlin and after Sacks won the opening set, 6-2, he jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set. Despite McLoughlin taking back a break and holding serve to close the gap to 5-4, Sacks held serve during his next service game to win the second set, 6-4, giving the Jaguars the 4-3 victory.
 
IUPUI is back in action on Saturday, April 7, when it travels to Macomb, Ill., to take on Summit League foe Western Illinois. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
