ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Unlike its first two matches this weekend, the IUPUI men's tennis team got out to an early lead by winning the doubles point, but Xavier rebounded with five wins in singles action to defeat the Jaguars, 5-2, Sunday afternoon.
 
The loss dipped IUPUI's record to 4-10 on the season, while Xavier improved to 5-6.
 
After the Jags top doubles tandem of Patrick O'Neill and Luke Bielawski lost a hard-fought 9-8 decision at No. 1 doubles, IUPUI bounced back with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. Joel Modesitt and Nick Volz took advantage of a break to win 8-6 at the No. 2 spot, while Thomas Gans and Deon Shafer continued to play at a high level winning 8-2 at the third doubles slot.
 
Unfortunately in singles play, the Jags couldn't string together any wins falling at spots one through four and the sixth position.
 
IUPUI's lone singles win came at the five spot with Shafer emerging with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
 
The Jaguars open Summit League play next weekend when they welcome Oral Roberts and UMKC to the West Indy Racquet Club. IUPUI hosts the Golden Eagles on Friday, March 2, at 2:30 p.m., before welcoming the Kangaroos for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday, March 3.
