INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s tennis team opened up its three-day, three-match stretch at home on Friday against Bradley and dropped two close singles matches and a tightly contested doubles point, which proved to be the difference in a 6-1 loss to the Braves at the West Indy Racquet Club.

The loss dropped the Jags to 4-8 on the season, while Bradley split a pair of matches on Friday losing earlier in the day to Butler as its record also moved to 4-8.

From the start, all three doubles matches were tight and each needed an extra game or a tiebreaker to determine the outcome. Unfortunately for IUPUI, its top two doubles combinations both fell in tiebreakers, giving the Braves the doubles point, while its third doubles tandem of Thomas Gans and Deon Shafer emerged with a 9-7 win.

The doubles win for Gans and Shafer marked their fifth straight victory in doubles play.

The Jags struggled at the top of the singles order falling in straight sets at the No. 1, 2, and 3 spots, which ultimately gave Bradley the four points it needed to secure victory.

However, there was plenty of action at the bottom of the singles lineup with two of three matches going to tiebreakers.

First at the No. 4 slot, Chase Emerson reversed a 6-3 opening-set loss with a 6-3 second-set win to move on to a third-set tiebreaker, but the sophomore fell just short of completing the comeback with a 10-7 loss in the tiebreaker.

Ivan Mojsejev picked up the Jaguars lone point on the night winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, before Deon Shafer, the reigning Summit League Player of the Week, found himself in a tiebreaker.

Similar to Emerson, Shafer fell 6-3 in the opening set, before rallying to win the second set in a tiebreaker to extend the match to a third-set tiebreaker. Unfortunately for Shafer, the third-set tiebreaker wasn’t as kind as he fell, 10-4, closing out the match.

The Jags are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they take on the Toledo Rockets at 3:30 p.m. in Toledo, Ohio.
