INDIANAPOLIS – For the second game in a row, the IUPUI women's basketball team had an opportunity to win the game in the final seconds, but the Jaguars last-second field goal attempt came up short resulting in a 58-57 loss to Youngstown State Monday evening at The Jungle.

The loss evened IUPUI's record at 4-4, while the Penguins improved to 6-1.

For the second straight game, Kerah Nelson led IUPUI in scoring with 22 points on 10-of-18 shooting, while Brandi Brown paced Youngstown State with a game-high 25 points and 16 rebounds.

The first half was one of the wildest halves statistically as Youngstown State connected on 60.9 percent (14-of-23) shots from the floor while outrebounding the Jaguars 22-6. However, IUPUI managed to force the Penguins into 22 first-half turnovers resulting in 20 points off turnovers to keep the Jags within two, 34-32, entering the half.

The fast-paced contest was tied at 15 with just less than 12 minutes to play in the opening half until a 7-0 YSU run opened up a 22-15 lead at the midway point of the half.

The Youngstown State lead reached 11 points, 34-23, with 3:58 on the clock, but a 9-0 run over the final 3:36 thanks in part to four points from Nelson, three from Katie Comello and two from Demetria Nunley-Lash sent IUPUI into the half on a positive note trailing by just two.

Out of the half, the Jags used buckets from Nelson and Nunley-Lash to knot the score at 36 before a Comello runner in the lane gave the Jaguars their first lead of the game, 38-36, with 17:17 to play.

Consecutive buckets by Nelson pushed the Jags in front by three, 42-39, with 14:58 on the clock, but a 10-2 run over the next 7:00 re-established a five-point lead for YSU at the under-eight media timeout.

Needing a spark, Nicole Rogers came off the bench and broke the Jags out of their offensive slump hitting three triples over the next 2:30 to bring IUPUI within three, 56-53, and a Dawn Luster runner with 1:56 to play put IUPUI back on top, 57-56.

On the other end, Brown connected on a lay-up with 1:27 to play to catapult the Penguins back in front by one, but Nelson was fouled trying to get to the bucket with 30 seconds to play giving IUPUI the chance to retake the lead.

Unfortunately, Nelson rimmed out both attempts, but the Jags managed to tip out the second missed free throw and set the offense for another attempt to go in front. As IUPUI attempted to get into its offense, a bobbled pass resulted in a jump ball giving the possession to Youngstown State with 20.6 seconds on the clock.

After the Jags burned two fouls to get Youngstown State in the bonus, Heidi Schlegel went to the line for a one-and-one. Schlegel went to the line 21-for-22 from the line on the season, but she missed the front end and the Jags got the rebound and called a timeout with 6.7 seconds to play setting things up for one last shot.

The Jaguars went to Nelson and she got up the final IUPUI shot with roughly two seconds to go, but the shot just fell off the rim and the Penguins corralled the rebound to preserve the one-point win.

Comello joined Nelson in double figures with 10 points, while IUPUI's leading scorer, DeAirra Goss struggled from the floor hitting just 1-of-12 attempts.

The Jaguars managed to win the turnover battle committing a season-low 13 while forcing Youngstown State into a season-high 37 turnovers, but the Penguins won the battle on the glass, 47-22. Of the 37 YSU turnovers, 20 were steals for IUPUI resulting in the most steals since Dec. 10, 2010 against Southern Illinois.

IUPUI has a quick turnaround as it hosts Western Michigan on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at The Jungle at 7 p.m.
