ABOUT PURDUE
-
The Boilermakers enter as the No. 12 team in the country and own a 10-1 record after defeating Summit League foe Oakland, 77-46, in its last outing.
-
Purdue’s only loss this season came at the hands of Connecticut on Nov. 24.
-
Three players are scoring in double figures for the Boilermakers with KK Houser and Courtney Moses leading the way with 12.5 ppg apiece.
-
The other double-figure scorer is Drey Mingo, who averaged 11.9 ppg.
-
Offensively, Purdue is shooting 47.0 percent from the floor through 11 games compared to 36.9 shooting for its opponents, and it is also hitting three’s at an impressive 41.7 percent clip.
-
The Boilermakers have also been strong on the glass outrebounding their opponents by 7.3 rpg, thanks in part to 9.2 rpg from Sam Ostarello.
THE SERIES WITH THE BOILERMAKERS
-
Friday’s game will be the third meeting all-time between Purdue and IUPUI with the Boilermakers winning the first two meetings.
-
The Jags and Boilermakers met in the season-opener last year with Purdue defeating IUPUI, 75-45.
-
LAST TIME OUT ...
-
A 12-0 Butler run midway through the second half reversed a two-point deficit into a ten-point lead, which proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs held off IUPUI, 67-58, Tuesday (Dec. 18) inside The Jungle.
-
Three players scored in double figures for IUPUI led by Katie Comello’s 12 points, but 26 costly turnovers resulted in 23 Butler points giving the Bulldogs their fourth straight win in the all-time series between the two programs separated by just six miles.
-
Akilah Sims and Comello combined to score IUPUI’s first seven points as it jumped in front 7-2, but a 9-0 Butler response placed the Bulldogs in front, 11-7, with 14:17 to play in the first half.
-
A Dawn Luster triple from the left baseline trimmed the Jags deficit to 11-10, but Butler maintained a lead until three triples by DeAirra Goss during an 11-3 run placed IUPUI on top, 26-24, at the under-four-minute media timeout.
-
Daress McClung buried a three from the top of the key to catapult Butler back in front, 29-28, with 1:45 remaining in the half, but a Jordan Barton put-back off her own miss and a pair of Comello free throws offset two Hannah Douglas free throws in the final minutes sending IUPUI into the half with a 32-31 lead.
-
Out of the break, Alex Thompson came off the bench and scored four points helping the Jags keep a 40-38 lead with 13:35 on the clock. However, Thompson’s bucket that put IUPUI in front with 13:35 to go was IUPUI’s last bucket before going scoreless for the next 5:37. Butler took advantage by putting together a 12-0 run that gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the evening, 52-42.
-
A Sims lay-up with 7:58 to play snapped the run, but just as IUPUI cut its deficit to four on a Dee-Dee Bellamy jumper with 6:00 on the clock, the Bulldogs quickly pushed their lead back to 10 points, 58-48, with just under five minutes to go.
-
Down the stretch, the Jags managed to close within six and had a handful of good opportunities to trim their deficit further, but none of those looks fell and Butler managed to hit its free throws on the other end of the floor to earn the 67-58 victory.
-
Goss and Sims also finished in double figures for the Jags with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
-
After hitting 46.2 percent of its shots from the field in the first half, including 62.5 percent of its three’s, IUPUI connected on just 34.3 percent of its attempts from the floor in the final 20 minutes including going 0-for-6 from behind-the-arc.
-
Butler, meanwhile, also saw its shooting percentage dip from the first half to the second half, but the Bulldogs outscored IUPUI 14-2 from the charity stripe in the second half alone.
PARKINSON RETURNS TO MACKEY
-
IUPUI head coach Austin Parkinson will make a return to where he played college basketball on Friday when the Jags travel to Purdue.
-
Parkinson played at Purdue under legendary coach Gene Keady from 2000-04, and closed his career tied for tenth on the Boilermakers’ all-time assist list after leading the squad in that category in both his sophomore and seniors seasons.
-
Additionally, he led the Big Ten in assist-to-turnover ratio in each of his final three seasons.
-
Parkinson made his return to Mackey Arena as an opposing head coach for the first time last season when the Jags took on the Boilermakers on Nov. 13, 2011.
FRESHMAN IMPACT
-
With Kerah Nelson missing the last two games, freshman Akilah Sims has stepped up in her absence.
-
In games against Goshen and Butler, Sims has put up 10.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg in just 16.0 minutes of action.
-
Her 10.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg lead the team in both those categories over the last two games.
-
Against Goshen, Sims scored a career-high tying 11 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in just 12 minutes for her first career double-double.
-
She followed that with 10 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes against Butler while battling foul trouble.
-
On the season, Sims is averaging 5.9 ppg and 4.4 rpg in 14.6 minutes per game.
TURNOVERS AND STEALS
-
Coming into its game against IUPUI on Dec. 3, Youngstown State’s season high for turnovers was 19.
-
However, the Penguins had not seen pressure like the Jags as they nearly doubled their previous season-high against IUPUI committing 37 turnovers.
-
Of the 37 turnovers, 20 were steals for the Jags, marking the first time since Dec. 10, 2010, against Southern Illinois that IUPUI had recorded 20 steals in a game.
-
So far this season, the Jaguars aggressive, up-tempo defense has forced their opponents into 25.8 turnovers per game and IUPUI owns a +6.5 turnover margin.
-
Of the 284 turnovers forced, 128 have been steals averaging out to 11.6 spg.
-
Just once this season has an IUPUI opponent finished a game with less than 20 turnovers and that was Indiana - the Hoosiers finished with 16.
-
Prior to the Butler game, the Jaguars ranked 18th nationally in turnover margin (+7.2).
BALANCED SCORING
-
While DeAirra Goss and Kerah Nelson have provided a bulk of the scoring for the Jaguars this season, the Jags have excelled when having that third scorer step up.
-
So far this season, Katie Comello has filled that role with six double-figure scoring games, which is second on the behind Goss’ eight double-digit scoring outings.
-
Outside of those three, however, IUPUI has had six additional players score in double figures at least once.
-
Akilah Sims has reached at least 10 points four times this season, Nicole Rogers has done so twice, while Dee-Dee Bellamy, Claire Holba, Alyssa Holder and Nevena Markovic each have done so once.
-
When IUPUI has at least three players score in double figures, the Jags are 6-2 this season, with their losses coming at Eastern Illinois on Nov. 29 and against Butler on Dec. 18.
