INDIANAPOLIS - Oakland's Joey Tinnion scored a pair of goals and Kyle Bethel added a goal and an assist as Oakland raced past IUPUI, 3-0 on a frigid Saturday (Oct. 6) night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.

Oakland (8-3, 3-0 Summit), which came in as one of the nation's top scoring offenses, flexed some offensive muscle late in the first half as Bethel setup Tinnion's eventual game-winning goal. Bethel bullied his way through the right side of the IUPUI defense before slotting a ball to Tinnion, who was stationed straight away just 14 yards from goal. The Oakland attacker had time to compose himself before rolling a shot past IUPUI's Eduardo Cortes for the game's first goal in the 40th minute.

After halftime, IUPUI came out on the attack and seemed determined to pull even. In the 48th minute, Emile Garcia was in amongst the trees on a scrum and had a header played off the back line by an Oakland defender right at OU goalkeeper Scott Messer.

Moments later, senior Kyle Hyland had quality chances first in the 49th minute when he fired wide left and 70 seconds later when he had an initial stop knocked down by Messer. On the rebound attempt, junior Gregory Efiom misfired high of frame with Messer well off his back line.

Messer's best defensive stop of the night came in the 61st minute when he preserved his shutout with a brilliant stop of a Ryan Robinson attempt. Robinson, a Michigan-native, split a pair of defenders before angling a shot from the left side towards the back post.

Messer left his feet and got his left hand on the ball, punching it off the far post and back onto the field of play. From there, Oakland cleared the ball out of harm's way before IUPUI could get another shot attempt.

"Robinson came in and gave us the spark we needed," IUPUI head coach Isang Jacob said. "But again, they're a good team. I want to give Oakland the credit. The key thing about Oakland is they know their roles and their players know their roles.

"We gave our players roles and we gave them specific responsibilities and we didn't take care of them."

With IUPUI chasing a goal, Oakland was able to find some cracks in the Jaguars' defense as the evening progressed. Bethel made it 2-0 in the 65th minute, thanks to assists from John Timm and Matt Dudley. Timm slid a pass out wide to Dudley, who played a brilliant lead pass forward to Bethel. Given a breakaway opportunity, Bethel lined a shot just inside the far post, despite Cortes challenging to take his angle away.

Tinnion made it 3-0 in the 84th minute with a breakaway, thanks to Gavin Hoy's assist.

IUPUI (4-8-2, 1-2 Summit) outshot Oakland 18-12 and had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks, but was unable to solve Messer, who finished with five stops. Cortes made six saves in 90 minutes work. Hyland led all players with seven shots while Bethel and Tinnion led the Golden Grizzlies with three apiece.

"They're a veteran team," Jacob said. "(Bethel) is a special player. He's a 23-year old kid, he's very mature. They know their role well and it shows in the way they play. Right now, they have 13 goals in three games in conference and you can't take that away from them."

Oakland came in averaging 2.8 goals per game and having outscored its first two Summit League foes 10-1. The loss dropped the Jaguars to 4-2 at Carroll Stadium this season and was the first time IUPUI was blanked on its home turf. IUPUI's best scoring chance of the first half was a blast by senior Sean McGrath from in close the flew just high of the crossbar.

Jacob's squad will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 when the Jaguars travel to Tulsa, Okla. to take on associate member Oral Roberts. That match is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. Eastern kickoff.
